Catalytic distillation is a new technology that combines reaction and distillationin a single column. However, up to now, most of publications focused mainly on theapplications of catalytic distillation, and there have a little publications focused on thecatalyst for catalytic distillation. The aim of this paper is to develop a novel structuredsolid acid catalyst packing for catalytic distillation. The structured Al2O3-Al carrier was prepared by anodic oxidation of high-purityaluminium foils, the anodic film thickness,the pore size distribution and the specificsurface area were mainly affected by anodic conditions, the XRD results showed thatthe support anodized Al2O3 layer is amorphous oxide supporting. A novel structure solid acid SO4 /Al2O3-Al catalyst for catalytic distillation was 2-prepared by impregnation of anodized aluminium plates with aqueous H2SO4, andcharacterized by XPS, BET, XRD, NH3-TPD. XRD patterns of samples showed thatthe support anodized Al2O3 layer is amorphous oxide supporting. NH3-TPD resultsshowed that the catalyst had intermediate acid sites. The catalyst was active for theesterification of acetic acid with ethanol, and had good stability. A novel structured solid acid SO4 /ZrO2-Al2O3-Al catalyst for catalytic 2-distillation was prepared by supporting SO4 /ZrO2 onto the structured Al2O3-Al 2-carrier prepared by anodic oxidation of high-purity aluminium foils, and the sampleswere characterized by XRD,BET,XPS,NH3-TPD methods. The results showed thatthe SO4 /ZrO2-Al2O3-Al catalyst had intermediate acid sites. The XRD results 2-showed that ZrO2 was utterly dispersed on Al2O3-Al. The catalytic activities ofSO4 /ZrO2-Al2O3-Al catalyst for the esterification of acetic acid with ethanol were 2-higher than that of SO4 /Al2O3-Al catalyst. 2- The catalytic distillation for the synthesis of ethyl acetate was conductedexperimentally in a pilot plant with SO4 /Al2O3-Al and SO4 /ZrO2-Al2O3-Al catalyst 2- 2-respectively, the results showed that the catalysts had good catalytic activities in theprocess of catalytic distillation. The Pressure drop and the mass transfer efficiency of the SO4 /Al2O3-Al and the 2-SO4 /ZrO2-Al2O3-Al catalysts were examined. Its results showed that the catalyst 2-packings had little pressure drop, and the mass transfer efficiency of the catalystpackings were much similarity with that of stainless θpacking. The catalystpackings were suitable for use in catalytic distillation.
