| Purpose of Research:This is an essay on the historical study of the herbal textual research on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica. Herbal textual research of Chinese Materia Medica, aiming to clarify the original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica, is a key foundational research of Chinese herbaalism with long academic history. The purpose of this essay is, on the point of view of academic history, to vertically investigate the herbal textual researches of original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica, so as to systematical sort out its academical achievement, demonstrate its historical development route, explore the inner rule of its academical progress, summary its academical research methods and inherit the research experiences of typical scholars. This work can provide references and enlightenment for the future development of the herbal textual research on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica, and possess important academic value and connects the past and future developmen of this area.Methods of Research:This essay adopts the methods of historical division, comprehensive researching, typical case analysis and methodology researching to carry out the academic historical study of the herbal textual research on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica. Historical division is an important method in the area of historiography research, through which, the essentially disparity of different historical stages and be revealed, and the characteristic and rule of its historical development can be demonstrated. Comprehensive researching method is, in holds in massively the material foundation and through systemetical analysis and comprehensive comparison in vertical and transverse multi-dimensions, to investigate the academic achievement, its characteristic and its pros and cons. Typical case analysis is to select the most typical academic literature, scholars and its achievement to conduct deep analysis. This method is used to study the academic characteristic, advantages and disadvantages and academic rules, so as to discuss their researching experiences. Methodology researching is used to extract abstractly the academic researching thinking and methods, which is helpful for the continuity and heritage.Results of Research:Based on the research methods, this essya partitions the acamedic history of the herbal textual researches on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica into three stages:(1) from Liang Dynasty when Tao Hongjing publicated<Variorum of Shennong’s Classic of Materia Medica> till the beginning of the 20th century when Zhao Yuhuang publicated<China’s new materia medica records>, which is the ancient stege of Herbal textual research of Chinese Materia Medica. During this stage, the original variety of Chinese Materia Medica can only be verificated relatevely but indicated to the species name. (2) from the beginning of the 20th century when Zhao Yuhuang publicated<China’s new materia medica records> till the 60 decades of the 20th century when Xie Zongwan publicated <discussion on Chinese herbal varieties>, which is the early modern stage of Herbal textual research of Chinese Materia Medica. During this stage, the original variety of Chinese Materia Medica can be precizely indicated to the species name based on the modern plant taxonomy methods. (3) from the 60 decades of the 20th century when Xie Zongwan publicated <discussion on Chinese herbal varieties> untill now, which is the mature stage of Herbal textual research of Chinese Materia Medica. During this stage, herbal textual researches of Chinese Materia Medica growed rapidly with abundant achievements.Based on the historical division study and using the comprehensive analysis method, this essay discusses the acamedic characteristic, merits and demerits of each stage of the herbal textual researches on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica. Especially, the academical development characteristic and tendency of the herbal textual researches in the contemporary era. This essay further analyzes the problems of the herbal textual researches of Chinese Materia Medica to be faced today, including shortage of talents, less attention of to be providing to this area, less usage of multidisciplinary methods and the weak linkage between this study and pharmaceutical industry. Based on these analysis, some constructive advices are put forward.This essay explores the methodology researching methods to systemetically summary the academic thinking of the herbal textual research on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica, which can provide the researching route and operation approach for the scholars focusing on this area. The essentially thinking process of the herbal textual research on original varieties of Chinese Materia Medica include the extraction of characteristic information of the Chinese Materia Medica and argumentation of its roginal varieties.
