In this article, some systematic studies were made on structure, quality, pharmacodynamics of polysaccharides from seeds of Plantaginis, and on application in identification of crude seeds of Plantaginis themselves and from their confused species by means of fingerprinting atlas technique.For the first time, the same acidic polysaccharide was isolated and purified respectively from seeds of Plantago major L and Plantago asiatica L. after extraction with water, precipitation with ethanol, deproteinization, gel chromatography. It was composed of D~xylosep. L-arabinosef and D-glucuronic acid, in the molar ratio of 6. 5:1. 5:1.0 through analysis of "ONMR.. TLC and GC桵S. Structural studies on the polysaccharide were performed by partial acid hydrolysis followed by methylation analysis.Studies on content of polysaccharides and expansion degree of crude seeds of three species of Plantaginis and their processed products in our country were made. Based on preliminary analytical results by gel chromatography, affection factors to content and expansion degree of polysaccharides in seeds of Plantaginis caused by different processing methods were discussed. All above researches established foundation of evaluation and standard formulation for quality about seeds of Plantaginis.According to the orthogonal test, preparative technological process of polysaccharides was defined. Results of pharmacodynamics experiments indicated that the polysaccharides could promote immunologic founction, decrease blood sugar and blood-lipid, purgate mildly, and which provided experimental basis to develop and utilize seeds of Plantaginis further.Both RAPD fingerprinting atlas technique .which was based on molecular level, and HPLC fingerprinting atlas technique were adopted for the first time to identify three species crude seeds of Plantaginis themselves and from their confused species. So adequate preparing work was done for the qualitative control of seeds of Plantaginis. An idea to establish a complex fingerprinting atlas using structural charateristic parameters of polysaccharides was provided first to enrich the intension of fingerprinting atlas technique.The aim of this paper was through above studies, to establish experimental basis of pharmacy and pharmacodynamics for clinical application of polysaccharides from seeds of Plantaginis.
