Objective: To study the prevalence of sleep disorders and related factors in 2~12 years old children in Changsha city.Method: Totally 3756 children were randomly cluster selected from five districts of Changsha city, whose parents were interviewed with questionnaires from June 2006 to April 2007. The questionnaire which was used in a research of sleep disorders for 2~12 years old children from 18 cities in china was modified and used in this research. The investigations were going on by the medical staff that was trained through the parents or care persons of children. One person was responsible for a questionnaire from one child.Results: The sleep time in a day of 2~12 years old children was 10.60 hours. The average times every day sleep in each age group were 12.26,11.57,11.33,11.26,10.95,10.64,10.62,10.45,10.28,9.83 and 9.61 hours respectively from 2~12 years old children. The mean total sleep times in a day of 2~5 years old children were remarkably shorter than the typical sleep of children at the same age in textbook. The children's sleep times in one day of each age groups were different remarkly but same for boys and girls. The total prevalence rate of sleep disorders in 2~12 years old children in Changsha city was 40.9%. The boy was 44.2% and girl was 37.2%. There was a remarkle difference of prevalences of sleep disorders bewteen boys and girls. Among their symptoms of sleep disorder, frequent sleep snoring was 8.2%, choke/gargling 1.5%, sleep apnea 0.8 %, restless sleep 7.6%, mouth breathing 4.9%, hyperhidrosis 22.6%, limber spasm 3.2 %, molar teeth 9.5 %, night talking 5.5 %, sleep walking 0. 9 % , enuresis in nighttime is 2.5 %, waking no reason is 1.9%, Sleep long time in daytime and less in night is 1.5%, going to sleep early 2.1%, night awakenings 1.6%, screeching or crying during sleeping is 1.8%. The prevalences of different sleep problems were significant between boys and girls and in age group and distincts of city. The main factors that affected the sleep time in a day of children were nine including children's ages and their mothers' ages, mothers' sleep time, children's fixed customs of sleeping time, pets in home, diet regulation, the numbers of child delivery of mother, asthma, the methods of beginning to sleep. The main factors that affected the sleep disorders were 17 including child age, sleep posture, crying in daytime, playing games before sleeping, needing comforter, the number of catching cold and food allergy, allergic Rhinitis, the kinds of food using bottle feeding, easy for actuation and hyperactivity, the number of family members, the relationship of children's guardians, having diseases or injured, the background of mother's education, history of parent's molar teeth, and mothers' bad feeling during motherhood and after childbirth.Conclusions: The sleep time in a day is decreased with the increasing of children age and shorter than the textbook in 2~5 years old children. There is a higher prevalence rate of sleep disorders in children in Changsha city than the level of investigations in other cities, it was 40.9%.The prevalence of sleep disorders of boys was larger than girls. So the pediatrians, the child health care staff and children's parents should pay more attention to their sleep disorders. There were many factors that affected the sleep problems of children including children's age, heredity, social and culture background and environmental factors. It was suggested that the sleep problems be recognized and discovered early and be gotten intervention and treatment in time. The concrete methods of prevention and treatment about the disease should be researched in the future.
