Urban culture changed poet's basic mode of understanding and feeling the world, and promoted the generation of their modern spirit and aesthetic experience. Except for poet's "modern", the new poetry itself also need a modern change in substance aspect. Within this process, urban culture made a decisive impact on modern Chinese poetry. In this thesis,we try to analyse the relationship between poetry and urban culture in the last one hundred years. We will focus on "city writing" including "city in the text"and"text in the city".Starting with the definition and discrimination of the concepts, the preface mainly expounds the meaning of "city writing in modern Chinese poetry" and the artistic characteristics in various periods of Chinese literature. While facing "modernity",poets could hold an open vision. By the use of language symbols and stylistic rhythm units, they establish a aesthetic qualities about city text. The significant value of city writing is building a modern city people image with active spirit and independence. After definition of the concepts,we will concern its current research conditions and establish the scope, objective and methods of the study,so as to look for the necessarily logical starting point and theoretical support to pave the way for the whole debate .In Chapter One,we focus on a historical angle, analysis the basic appearance, the typical poets and works of city writing in various periods. In the end of this chapter,we will summarize its aesthetic characteristics in order to clarify its particular elements during the rheological of new poetry. We choose "modern" and "contemporary" which is dating from political events to make a literary distinction about our city writing. In addition, while city writing in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao poetry is not included in our main research area,we could also base on a huge discourse system. Through the establishment of comparative perspective, we could get close to urban living experience and poetic style hided in colonial and local culture. Therefore, we will make a historical overall outlook for city writing in Taiwan,Hong Kong and Macao poetry in this chapter.Chapter Two observes around the perspectives of lyric protagonists when they face the city, and to explore its multi-dimensional expressions. We are eager to know how could they walk from pastoral countryside to the modern city context in the event of "shock".We also want to know how could they choose a "Flaneur" or "Dreamer" to drift away from the city mechanical experience and show their special psychological mechanism and aesthetic amenities as a modern urban people. By changing the speed among the "crowd",the Flaneur can look into the relevant experience with the crowd, even the secrets of the city. As an extension explanation of the Flaneur, "Dreamer" is also tryting to build a concrete way of thinking in chaotic urban landscape. The difference between them is that Dreamer donot need to try any effort on speed changing. By simulating the dream and vision,he can enter the anti-rational world and pay attention to "spirit".Through these multi-dimensional perspectives of the lyric protagonists,we can enrich our information on city text gradually, and find our image in the endless stream of "crowd".Chapter Three will combine poetic study with cultural study, perspective cafes, bars, subway, road, plaza and other typical city imagery symbols. We will analyse how poets build on the historical concept of city and modern emotional space by using these images. By analysing,we attempt to prove that: as an imagery space, city in the text is generated after lyric protagonist observing the aesthetic objects. City in the text is a image of the real urban space, but also a literary or cultural structure. The imagery space in poetic texts reflects the "city of words",which combines real life with ideal world .It provides opportunities for the generation of aesthetic modernity.Chapter Four is mainly talking about several typical aesthetic subjects in consumer time. In the core position of the urban culture, the aesthetic experience of the lyric protagonist would be effected by various factors, particularly the consumer culture. In this chapter,we try to inspect how the consumer culture makes an effect on human psychology through the materialization, body,as well as the modern sense of loneliness. As a poet,he should return to his inside world to search for rational support. It is the responsibility for them. Today, contemporary sense of loneliness is a form experiment pointed to everybody's heart back. The sense itself also contains urban poet's prophetic awareness. This is the typical characteristic of urban culture, but also the composition of the world's city writing which filled with strong feature of modern non-rational.Chapter Five turns to internal research area on poetry and grasps the aesthetic characteristics of city writing. For modern Chinese poets, city writing is a process of metaphor by their living attitude and aesthetic experience in the "city of words".As a literary structure, city culture exists in increasing process of text, and joins the aesthetic constitution of poetry. Such as images selection, language rhythm, the form of poetry and so on. City writing is not only containing special images and poetic topics, but also having the appropriate shape and aesthetic ways according to these subjects. During the creative writing, poets generally abandon the principles about emotion generating in classical poetry and traditional free verse. They rely on their intellectual intelligence and conscious genre awareness, mobilize the city imagery symbols and use surrealism means creating a rich implied effect. By these efforts, the poetry style is filled with "avant garde" and "innovation".In conclusion, we summarize the whole chapter, make an overall evaluation on city writing and point out its shortcomings objectively. By analysing its performance in the new century,we believe that the city writing in modern Chinese poetry is not only combining foreign with our native culture experience, but also an important element in world city literature.
