Data model is the core for a quality spatial database which is essential for quantitative prediction and evaluation of mineral resources. The Project of evaluation of nationwide mineral resources potential started in 2006, with a research funding of 1.7 billion Yuan, aims to evaluate the nationwide various mineral resources potentials, provide materials for mid-long term plan of nationwide mineral resources development. This task involves 25 minerals including coal, uranium, iron, copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, tungsten, Tin, potassium, manganese, nickel, gold, silver, chromium, molybdenum, antimony, rare earth and boron, lithium, phosphorus, sulphur and fluorite, siderite and barite. The fundamental data of geology, minerals, geophysical exploration, geochemical exploration, remote sensing and natural heavy concentrate and GIS technology is essential for the implement of the project. High level model, standardization and informationization are required in this project and miscellaneous spatial database of mineral resource evaluation will be built. Due to the numerous participants, wide spatial range, complex geological data and huge and complex geological conceptual models of this project, related working experiences cannot be found. Therefore, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to research the modeling and related key technologies for the spatial database of evaluation of nationwide mineral resources potential. In this thesis, with the project of "comprehensive information integration of nationwide important mineral resources potential evaluation" as a case study, the research progresses in the modeling, administration, application of geological data model and the maintenance of geological database were elaborated, guided by ontology theory, the establishment and optimization of data model for evaluation of nationwide mineral resources potential were researched using database technology, data dictionary technology and state of the art software coding technologies. And the following knowledge and achievements were gained.(1)The logical and physical data models for evaluation of nationwide mineral resources potential were established in accordance with the Terminology Classification and Code of Geology and Mineral Resources.(2)A data model dictionary was established to cope with the complexity of geological conceptual data models for evaluation of nationwide mineral resources potential.(3)A new approach to development of large spatial database was proposed based on a data model dictionary. In the approach, models and data were apart from each other, a flexible component was developed to assist the development of database application software in different coding environments and it greatly enhanced the quality and efficiency of software development. This approach solved the data transfer between Heterogeneous databases.(4) A metadata editing system was developed to administrate the metadata intelligently.(5) A data quality check system based on data model, a check system of spatial-temporal topological relationships of strata based on knowledge and rule set were developed to make up the lack of MAPGIS in these aspects.(6) Simultaneous update of map and attribute data, intelligent input of attribute data, legend standardization, data integration and solid construction technology were developed based on data models.(7) A data model design code, GeoCAD, a model administration code GeoMAM, a model application code GeoMAG were developed and they played an important role in the implement of the project of evaluation of nationwide mineral resources potential.
