It is generally acknowledged that the change of clothing is synchronized with the evolution of human civilization.Chinese Han Nation’s Costume is an important carrier of Chinese civilization,and it is also a genuine reflection of the changes of the Chinese nation history and Culture.As the remarkable visual symbols on clothing,patterns can not only serve goals of pattern making and the functions of clothing,but also they play the role of decorating and beautifying the clothes,which may demonstrate more profound meanings.The rich pattern design,colors,themes,the making process and material applications not only reflect the social features of the era in which people live and the folk culture connotation,but they directly reflect the social status and the emotions of the clothing owners.The research on clothing patterns is a significant supplementary methodology that can be also used in the studies on sociology,history,religions,arts,archaeology and folklore.Central Plains region is the main area where the Han Nation’s costumes exist.This multi-level studies on Han Nation’s costumes and its’ patterns,can not only witness the development of Chinese national history and but also gain better understanding on the spiritual world of Chinese nationality from Humanistic and folk custom perspectives.This dissertation has eight chapters that mainly consist five phases as follows.The phase is also the first chapter,which is the introduction of this study.It mainly discusses the origin of the research,the definition of research subject,the research content and significance,the current research status and the literature review,the research methods and the theoretical explanations of innovative points.The second phase,namely the second chapter,is the research on the development and characteristics of the Han Nation’s Costume patterns.In this part of study,a substantial number of archaeological reports that are used in a vast number of history subjects are adopted as the research materials.To be exact,based on literature analysis,and the methods of charts analysis and image classification,it compared the Han Nation’s Costume patterns,specially the Central Plains region of the Han Nation’s costume patterns throughout different historical periods in accordance with the time trajectory.It then finds that the unique characteristics of the Han Nation’s costume pattern evolution are different from the patterns originated from the minority groups,that is,the ignorantly pursuit of beauty in the primitive society at the beginning,to become a symbol of power and position,and finally ended in the reflection of the national culture and regional folk custom.The third phase is the core content of this dissertation,including from the third chapter to the chapter sixth.This phase is analytical research on the classifications and the essence of the Han Nation’s costume patterns from the Central Plains region in China.Specifically,the Han Nation’s costume patterns are divided by the different meanings in four chapters,including love theme patterns,bless or curse patterns,life theme patterns and comprehensive theme patterns.From the artistic presentations of the patterns,the unique characteristics of regional culture and folk custom connotation can be explored.The research materials are used in this phase are obtained from author’s field trip,and the result shows that the connotation of the Han Nation’s costume pattern from Central Plains region cannot be compared with any other cultural region,which presents the essential and the typical characteristics the Central Plains culture,and reflects the obvious geographical characteristics of plain farming life.The fourth phase is the proposal with respect to the Nvhong workmanship on the Han Nation’s costume pattern and the methods of pattern protection and inheritance,which is also the chapter seventh.With regard to the research on the technical aspects of the Han Nation’s costume patterns.It explores the historic tracks and the features of embroidery craft in the same geographical area based on a considerable numbers of literature review;analyzes Hvhong crafts from the a large number of handed down great pieces,and it concludes that the reprehensive types of craftsmanship and different visual effects on the Han Nation’s costume patterns in Central Plains region,and the appropriate expression patterns of subject image.In terms of the protection and inheritance of costume patterns,It only stays in the surface level of the discussion on the significance of the research subject protection,but also proposes a practical and enforceable scheme,that is,to propose the effective means of establishing the database on the basis of protecting the intangible cultural heritage advocated by China.And it goes on to carry on more profound research on this matter.The fifth phase,namely the conclusion and expectation of this dissertation.It firstly surmises the relationship between the clothing visual presentation and the folk custom connotations into three different types,including synonyms,homonymy and homonyms.It then propose two premises with regard to the continuing research on the costume patterns of Han Nation,that is,the protection of costume patterns by using technical methods and the rescue of folk costume information.
