Recent years have witnessed the development of global low-carbon economy,as a developing country,besides the pressure of economic development and social security,China has also faced a series of environmental problems as well as challenges,for instance,destruction of the environment,greenhouse gas emission reduction,and shortage of natural resources.Therefore,in order to achieve "low-carbon" and "development" at the same time,the transition to a low-carbon economy is not only necessary,but also urgent.At present,a potential low-carbon industrial revolution is still in its infancy.The low-carbon competitiveness of many western developed countries,which have absolute dominant position in the traditional industries,has not yet formed.This is undoubtedly a great opportunity for the leapfrog development of low-carbon technology and.industry in our country,and low-carbon technological innovation is recognized as the key means to achieve the leapfrog development and to realize the carbon emission reduction target.Therefore,our country should take the low-carbon technological innovation as a breakthrough point:to reduce carbon emission through large-scale development of low-carbon technologies and to transform and upgrade traditional industries through advanced low-carbon technological innovation.Only in this way,"low-carbon" and "development" can be achieved at the same time.Under this background,this research investigated the relevance of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in manufacturing sector.The main purpose is to organize the related concepts and contents of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading,to establish a conceptual framework for the analysis of the relevance of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading;and to review the trajectory of theoretical development of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in manufacturing sector,to put forward the starting point of research on the relevance of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in manufacturing sector;and to unveil the relevant process and its dynamic change of ow-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in PV industry,to put forward the details research questions of research on manufacturing sector as a whole in our country;and to unveil the interactions between low-carbon technological innovation in the overall manufacturing industry and industry upgrading.Different policy suggestions were provided in response to differing ways of interactions,which can implement the joint development of low-carbon technological innovation in manufacturing sector and industry upgrading as well as the development of low-carbon economy in our country.Firstly,we scrutinize the theories concerning low-carbon technological innovation,industrial upgrading,and the interactions between them.We first identified the key low-carbon technologies in our country;we then summarized the definition of low-carbon technological innovation and industry upgrading,as well as their characteristics,influencing factors,research method,and measurement and evaluation;we analyzed existing studies from two aspects:the impacts of low-carbon technological innovation on industry upgrading,and the effects of industry upgrading on technological innovation performance;and we explored the inner relevance of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading,and put forward an integrated analysis framework specific to the relevance of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading.Secondly,we applied the knowledge domain visualization software CiteSpace Ⅱ for the quantitative analysis of literature on low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in manufacturing sector,consisting of the theoretical basis of low-carbon technological innovation and research frontiers at both home and abroad,the key cited literature and citing literature on the research of industrial upgrading in manufacturing sector.Moreover,we analyzed the development paradigm and its characteristics of research on low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading,and put forward the the starting point of research on the relevance of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in manufacturing sector.The quantitative analysis of literature revealed a research paradigm of low-carbon technological innovation different from traditional technology innovation research,found that research on manufacturing upgrading pays attentions to the manufacturing upgrading in developing countries under the global value chain,and based on the development trajectory of research on low-carbon technological innovation and manufacturing upgrading identified a intersection point of two fields.Thirdly,we applied the technology innovation system and the global value chain method as the analysis framework.Through historical event analysis and semi-structured interviews,we investigated the relationships between low-carbon technological innovation and industry upgrading during the process of the development of photovoltaic industry in our country.The concrete steps include:we explored the associations between low-carbon technological innovation and industry upgrading,raised two preliminary research questions,and provided the theoretical supposition the results of existing research;centering on the two research questions,we then provided the principle for the selection of case studies,and discussed the extreme typicality of photovoltaic industry in our country as a single case;based on the data sources from historical events and semi-structured interviews,we analyzed the interactions between low-carbon technological innovation and industry upgrading during the development of photovoltaic industry in our country.This part of exploratory case study revealed the dynamic changes in the interactions and relationships between low-carbon technological innovation(low-carbon product and process innovation)and industrial upgrading(manufacturing,research and design development,brand marketing,and service upgrading).We also found the difference between the way low-carbon technological innovation affecting industrial upgrading and the way industrial upgrading influencing low-carbon technological innovation.Moreover,we verified the effectiveness of the proposed integrated framework for analyzing the relationship between low-carbon technological innovation and manufacturing upgrading.Finally,using the panel data of 14 manufacturing industries for a period of seven years,we analyzed the relevance mode and degree of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in Chinese manufacturing as a whole in a panel data model in EViews6.0.The concrete steps include:in order to address the research questions raised in the case study,we developed seven equations to demonstrate the interactions between the low-carbon technological innovation in manufacturing sector and industry upgrading,and explained in detail the meaning of every variable as well as data sources;we ran the seven models respectively and evaluated the modeling results;based on the modeling results we summarized the relevance mode and degree of low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in Chinese manufacturing as a whole.The empirical study in this part revealed the interactions between low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading in Chinese manufacturing as a whole,and the suppression effects of these interactions on their joint development.On the basis of the characteristics of low-carbon transformation in manufacturing sector in our country,we proposed three modes of potential benign interactions between low-carbon technological innovation and industrial upgrading.
