Shenzhen and Hong Kong are coastal cities made up largely of immigrants, and the rise of Chinese medicine in this region took place after the 19th century with its own unique characteristics.Research areas of Chinese medicine in the Lingnan region include distinguished Chinese medicine practitioners from outside mainland China, such as Hong Kong, which is the study purpose of this PhD thesis and the basis of the research topic.Methodologies:This PhD thesis examinesand analyzes the academic thinking and theories as well as clinical experiences of Lingnan Chinese medicine practitioner Huang Junwei and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Chinese medicine practitioner Huang Shangen. It is believed that this study will play a crucial role in promoting the Lingnan region’s medical research and development, enriching internal medicine within Chinese medicine,as well as providing more unique Chinese medicine treatment methods, all of which help to improve the academic level of Chinese medicine with treatment efficacy as a core focus. This PhD thesis also examines and summarizes Huang Junwei’s book "Selected Clinical Cases by Huang Junwei" in order to preserve and pass on his vast clinical experiences.1.Literature ReviewThe book"Selected Clinical Cases by Huang Junwer" was created by Huang Junwei’s son Huang Shangen in 1998.The majority of clinical cases in the book were taken from 1979 onward, when Huang Junwei was practicing Chinese medicine in Hong Kong.Huang Shangen compiled Huang Junwei’s clinical patient records and medical notes as well as summarized his academic thinking and theories in this book as internal reference for Key star Therapeutics Limited. This book has not been published in academic journals before and systemic analysis of this book is original.2.Interviews Conducted with Fellow Chinese Medicine PractitionersDuring the Cultural Revolution in China,a great number ofpatient records and clinical notes written by Huang Junwei were lost.Fortunately,I was able to conduct interviews with Huang Junwei’s student, distinguished Guangdong Chinese medicine practitioner Chen Furu,as well as Huang Junwei’s son, famous Shenzhen-Hong Kong Chinese medicine practitioner Huang Shangen.3.Clinical Practice ResearchIt is only through clinical practice can one fully understand and apply the theories and thinking of other Chinese medicine practitioners. As a registered Chinese medicine practitioner in Hong Kong,I applied "Keystar’s Strengthening Pills" in my clinical practice throughout the 3-year academic study for this PhD thesis. This allowed me to understand and experience the theory of "curing by seeking the foundation." Also,in order to standardize the proprietary Chinese medicines stemmed from Huang Junwei’s thinking and theories,I studied academic journals and literature as well as collaborated extensively with Guangdong Pharmaceutical University to develop assy and identification methods for Keystar Therapeutic Limited’s Strengthening pills and powder. In doing so,I ensured each of the products met and exceeded thestandards of Hong Kong’s Health Department.Results:1.An Academic Biography on Huang Junwei:Huang Junwei was born in 1906 into a family full of scholars and he was heavily influenced by Confucian since childhood. At the age of 6,he started boarding school at Guangzhou Panyu Primary School before going to Guangdong Guangya High School. In 1925,he was accepted into Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, formerly Guangzhou Chinese Medicine Specialty School, and after graduating in 1930,he assumed clinical practice in Macau,Shenzhen and then Hong Kong.In 1950,Huang Junwei returned to Shenzhen to establish Union Clinic, where he taught aspiring students and practiced Chinese medicine. In 1975,he participated in the construction and establishment of Shenzhen TCM Hospital. In 1979,Huang Junwei moved back to Hong Kong, where he and his son Huang Shangen established two Chinese medicine clinics in 1983 and 1985,respectively.In 1992,the father-son duo founded Keystar Therapeutics Limited to develop and produce proprietary Chinese medicines. In 1996,at the age of 91,Huang Junwei passed away peacefully in Hong Kong. The Shenzhen TCM Hospital sent their deep condolences to Huang Shangen:"Huang Junwei was one of the founders of the establishment,he inherited and broadened the field of Chinese medicine, enhanced practitioners’ communication between Shenzhen and Hong Kong,as well as provided high quality health care to the people in Shenzhen and Guangdong." From their condolence letter, one can see Huang Junwei’s devotion to Chinese medicine and the concept of "Shenzhen-Hong Kong" distinguished Chinese medicine practitioner was established.Throughout his life,Huang Junwei treated generations of patients and in 1998his son Huang Shangen selected and summarized 28 of those cases to create "Selected Clinical Cases by Huang Junwei" to honor his father. In 2005,Huang Shangen established Jun Shan Care,a Chinese medicine clinic in Hong Kong, where its name combines the names of the father-son duo. There,Huang Shangen continues to apply his father’s thinking of using non-toxic herbs and strengthening the foundation as the central treatment philosophy in his practice.2.The Essence of Huang Junwei’s Thinking and TheoriesI extensively examined and evaluated the theoryof "consolidation of the root" by ancient theorists and practitioners.Huang Junwei’s academic thinking and theories stemmed from Nei Jing-the crucial element in treatment is through finding the foundation.Synopsis ofPrescriptionsof the Golden Chamber or Jingui Yaoleue, pointed out"when the spleen is strong,no evils can harm the body." Required Reading from the Masters of Medicine or Yi Zhong Bi Dustated,"one must find the foundation when treating illnesses." Accordingly, the kidneys are regarded as the "congenital foundation, the origin of life," and the spleen is regarded as the "acquired foundation of life," supplying blood and qi.By consolidating the root, this means one must place heavy emphasis on spleen and kidneys while taking care of other Zhangfu.Huang Junwei was particularly influenced by his teacher Lu Pengzhu and he frequently discussed Lu Pengzhu’s theories with his son.Lu Pengzhu was famous for his work on "the Abstract of the Four States’ Study" in which he theorized the disorder of Qi in spleen and stomach would lead to chronic illnesses, hence he theorized the key to good health is through maintaining a harmonic relationship between the two foundations.Throughout Huang Junwei’s 60-year career,he cured all manner of cases by regulating the harmony between spleen and stomach. He emphasized the importance of harmony between spleen and stomach,to the extent that he questioned the existence of illnesses should the spleen and stomach be in harmony.3."Selected Clinical Cases by Huang Junwei"Huang Junwei valued treatment effectiveness in his clinical practice. He applied the harmonization between spleen and stomach throughout his 60 years of clinical practice. In this PhD thesis.20 clinical cases were selected for critical analysis.Such cases include but are not limited to the following diseases or health conditions:Pain in the Upper Abdomen,Edema,Kidney Stone,Enlarged Prostate,Kidney Failure,Cough,Tuberculosis,Phlegm Retention,Rhinitis,Dizziness,Tinnitus,Chest Pain,Pain in the Waist,Stroke,Infertility,Menorrhagia,Insomnia,Cirrhosis,Enzema, and Preauricular Sinus.Huang Junwei was an expert in the art of diagnosis. His talent for diagnosis gave him the resources to treat even illnesses whose causes were not apparent and was able to predict complications,if any. While making a diagnosis he considered the seasons, temperature, patients’ personal characteristics, occupation,as well as eating habits.Through analyzing the whole,he was able to provide precise diagnosis, treatments and medical advices. The younger generation can stand to learn a lot by studying his diagnostic techniques and attitudes toward his patients.Huang Junwei summarized the following:3.1 Strengthening the spleen and stomach to prevent cold and flu.3.2 Maintaining a harmonic relationship between yin and yang organs to treat all kinds of illnesses. The emphasis is on the spleen and stomach, which act as the hub, regulating the qi and blood in the body.3.3 Treating medically unexplained illnesses by promoting circulation of qi and blood as well as expelling stasis. For all medically unexplained illnesses, there are always phlegm, dampness and stasis.Strengthening the spleen promotes vital qi,this keeps blood circulation in vessels and prevents stasis. When the spleen is weak and vital qi decreases, blood circulates poorly and stasis occurs.Weakened spleen also promotes phlegm.4.[Keystar]Strengthening Pills in Clinical PracticeWith 60 years in clinical practice and apprentice training,Huang Junwei’s reputation was well established throughout Shenzhen and Hong Kong.Through arduous mentorship, his son Huang Shangen inherited his thinking and theories.Together, the father-son duo began developing and producing water-honeyed pills in the 1980s.The purpose of developing such Chinese herbal pills was to help strengthen their patients’ health following all kinds of illnesses. This "strengthening root" has since become their central thinking in treating all manner of cases.Currently, the father-son duo has six proprietary Chinese medicines registered in Hong Kong. These proprietary Chinese medicines suit those who suffer from chronic illnesses, and they are:[Keystar]Key star’s Joint&Pain[Keystar]Strengthening Pills for Stomach[Keystar]Strengthening Pills for Rhinitis[Key star]Keystar’s Spirit[Keystar]Strengthening Pills for Chronic
