The Phonetic System Research Of Sino-Tibetan Transliteration Sources From Dunhuang

There is a special kind of paper in the Tibetan Documents excavated from Dunhuang. In some papers,Tibetan phonetic notations are used for Chinese Characters which are called"Phonetic Notation", the other papers that use Tibetan to translate the whole or part of the Chinese manuscripts are called'transliteration", all of these papers are collectively known as Sino-Tibetan Transliteration Sources. This kind of paper is not only the first-hand materials for Ancient Tibetan Research, but also the important evidences for Ancient Chinese Research, thus they are always highly valued by Phonological Circle. In the 30s of 20 Century, the first comprehensive research monograph of Sino-Tibetan Transliteration Sources which named The Dialectal Accent of Tang and the Five Dynasties was finished by Luo Changpei. In the 80s of the same century, Takata Tokio wrote A Historical Study of the Chinese Language Based on Dunhuang Materials:The Hexi Dialect of the Ninth and Tenth Centuries, this book analysed the phenomenons of phonology and grammar which were reflected from 14 kind of materials. With the publication of the new achievements such as Long Scroll (C131)?Samanthamaukha-parivarta of the Saddharma-pundarikasutra (?3256) etc., the research of Sino-Tibetan Transliteration Sources will got promoted.In this thesis, there are twenty-one Sino-Tibetan Transliteration Sources used. Studying the research results of scholars, the author try to make a comment on them. Through collecting and researching the Sino-Tibetan Transliteration Sources, The author will conclude the Initial Consonant, Finals, and the Tone systems, and corroborate with Qieyun and other handed-down documents, also compare with the modern Dialects from the provinces of Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai etc., in order to discuss the law of pronunciation changes.In spite of that the Tibetan could not recorded the Chinese Pronunciations of that day truthfully and entirely, but it can reflect the characteristics of pronunciation in a certain extent. Such as, pronunciation of the initials xi and the initials jian were confused. The Phonetic value of prefixed letter (?) is equivalent to a base letter in Sino-Tibetan transliteration sources from Dunhuang. The difference between fourth and third division of the Initial Doublets is while the former has Tibetan ya-btags the latter does not.
