Modern Spain is a place inhabited by multiple civilizations, including the remote indigenous Celtic-Iberian civilization, the foreign Roman civilization, the Arabic(Islamic)civilization, and the Christian civilization that shaped from the combination of civilizations in the Medieval era.We can notice by tracing the development of Spanish history that the Roman-Spain period lasted almost seven hundred years, from 218 BC when Romans invaded Iberian Peninsula in the second Punic War to the 70s of 5th century when the Roman provincial government in Iberia formally ended. The Roman-Spain period was also the period of Romanization in Spanish provinces, during which a series of revolutions took place in such fields as politics, economy, religion, military, culture and society. The early Roman Empire which lasted from the end of 1st century BC to AD 2nd century was the most remarkable and active phase of Romanization in the provinces.Roman rule leaves a significant mark upon Spanish history. The collision between and combination of Roman civilization and Celtic-Iberian civilization propelled the Roman-Spain civilization into being in the early empire. This dissertation is trying to analyze the nature, essential features and historical significance of the Romanization in Spanish provinces and its effects on the government of the whole empire. The dissertation is composed of three parts, including introduction, the main body of five chapters and conclusion. The introduction mainly summarizes the modern academic research on the Romanization in Spanish provinces, making a literature review and analyzing the current research, thus we can get a clear knowledge that there are still many controversial and unresolved problems in the research of Romanization, even though there are so many research achievements made by western academic society.Meanwhile, there are few domestic scholars who study Romanization in Spanish provinces, and the study is still at the beginning stage,so there needs further research.Chapter one mainly studies Spain before Roman era, looking back from all respects on the situation of Spain before conquered by Rome and the historical process of the conquering. This chapter is also trying to analyze the reason of the slowness of Roman conquering and the significance and influence of that conquering.Chapter two mainly studies the Romanization in politics of Spanish provinces. There are some problems needed further research, which include the founding and development of Spanish provinces, the revolution of administrative methods and the spread of Roman citizenship. From these elaborations, this dissertation is also trying to argue that the Romanization in politics lays the foundation for the Romanization in the provincial economy, cultural art and religion.Chapter three mainly studies the Romanization in economic field in Spanish provinces by analyzing the developments of agriculture, mining industry, manufacture and commerce, which offer the material base for other fields of Romanization.Chapter four studies the Romanization of religion and culture in Spanish provinces, thus trying to illustrate the specific behavior of the effects of Roman civilization on religion, culture.Chapter five mainly studies the Romanization of the urban development, which in detail are the urban origin and development,lay-out of cities, construction and social life and influence of the Romanization. Thus this chapter interprets the significant effects of urban Romanization on the Spanish provinces and also the Roman Empire. The last part gives a conclusion and tries to analyze in theory that the Romanization in Spanish provinces was the result of the collision between and combination of Roman civilization and Celtic-Iberian civilization, which finally shaped the Roman-Spain civilization of the early Roman Empire.
