According to Song dynasty's document,Bu Nian Tu was attributed Tang Dynasty's painter Yan Liben.It demonstrates figure painting style of Early Tang period,and has complicated issues resulting from its history,with many hidden information within the images.This article is to reveal the painter's style as simple background with rigid realist approach,and Tang's characteristic approach of discourse through image.Within a restored context of historical interaction between Tang and Tibet,through an angle of pictorial order and power symbols,the articl e further discusses the “power and ritual” aspect in detailed phases.And,it deciphers and re-exams image details and pictorial theme.As result,the “presentation” of image order of Bu Nian Tu has always shows the elusive and profound “meaning”of power,and consequently forms the subtle narrative of image discourse in supporting of political ends.While enhance both party of Tang and Tibet's sovereignty and close interrelationship,the painting turns complex political situation into an instant image recogn izing Pax Sinica with China at the center of world order,which is also the Tang courts symbolic indication for heavenly mandate and imperial power legitimacy.Hence,it opens the way to understand the paintings historical connection between image presentati on and Yan Liben's status as Tang's high ranking bureaucrat.The crafty design of the painting worked well with its material medium,staging a historical image in which national ideal and international connections being depicted vividly.The discussion reg arding image power and order of Bu Nian Tu is a refinement of previous academic researches and rethinking of expanding scope of pictorial themes.It also reflects the true picture of early Tang's history,with hints and clues for further expression approaches and idea presentations of image discourse.
