The end of 19 th century to the beginning of 20 th century was a period of society changing in modern Chinese history.Because of the passive opening to the outside at that period,it was made a dramatic transition on Chinese society development.The history can be used as a window to view the modern Chinese art education,or as a mirror to reflect contemporary art education.Although the education system of Western painting was initially borrowed from Japan and Europe at first,then it became a fusion of Chinese traditions.Taking excellent Chinese traditional culture as the core,discovery and creation as the purpose,to form a style of Chinese traditional characteristics in the process of mutual absorbing and gradual improving,it has obtained a significant achievement.This paper attempts to analyse major courses of western painting in the national and public art colleges in the Republic of China,including its teaching content,methods and effects.Under this background,the differences between China and the West will be analyzed,and illustrate how these differences are dealt with using the Chinese-West fusion approach.The first chapter traces back to the source,then briefly describes the history,society and culture background of the formation of Western painting education,and the overview and classification of Western painting education during the Republic of China era.The second chapter to fifth chapter start respectively about anatomy and perspective,drawing and chromatics,sketching and practice,art theory and cultivation etc.in foundation courses of Western painting.They are guided by consciousness of problems and will represent the typical case of Chinese-West fusion education.The specific content and outcomes are analysed,combed and compared horizontally to clarify the spirit of culture responsibility behind the techniques and images,and to discuss the way that how to educate art students etc.The sixth chapter summarizes the characteristic and shortcoming of fundamental education in the Republic of China,and further reflects on problems in the current teaching of art through summarizing the previous experience,and combining with the current situation of contemporary social development.This research bases on original literiture and closely combines with feature of practical discipline,from the perspective of cultural background and teaching methods,is supported by theories and methods of education,art history,Chinese and Western painting,and explore the basic teaching methods and practices of art in the Republic of China in a various and multi-level way.The aim is to lead more thoughts on the positive development of contemporary art education in China by taking various courses of Western Painting as the main stream,and representative teaching method as a typical case;tracing its reasons;expounding its contents and characteristics;analyzing its gains and losses;and think about its enlightenment to the current and future education of art.
