| This generic qualitative study examined how close family members of individuals with fibromyalgia syndrome describe their experiences with the illness. The goal of this study was to expand the knowledge base in this research area by focusing on a population, close family members other than spouses, that has not been a focal point. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with ten close family members of individuals with fibromyalgia. Each interview was analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Data analysis revealed six themes: personal impact of illness, shifts within family, need for medical support, importance of social support, coping skills, and learning experience. The results were re-examined using Bowen's family systems theory, which was supported by the data. These findings add to existing literature and encourage future research on the impact fibromyalgia has on family members. |
