In recent years, the electronic map is widely used in car navigation, GPS navigation, the geographical line inquiry and other fields. Researchers pay more attention to GIS (Geographic Information System). The availability of many GIS products such as Google Maps leads to more widespread application of GIS. GIS-based monitoring system, which provide many innovative features such as combining real-time GIS map alarm and alarm video not only solve problems of traditional surveillance systems, but also lead GIS technology to dynamic data display area.As technology is constantly evolving, new demands follow. The traditional GIS monitoring system is desktop mode, commonly known as "fat client" system, this model is suitable for real-time data displaying. With the extensive application of Internet, Web as a convenient carrier, was used in a lot of systems, Web-based application system, commonly known as "thin client" system, has a characteristic of no requirement of desktop client installation. Customers find that it is very convenient to use Web browser to run applications, so that Web-based application system is the way of the future. This paper aims to implement a Web-based GIS monitoring system, a real-time monitoring system and general application systems are quite different, and the traditional Web technology can't implement real-time data display. In order to achieve real-time GIS map alarm and alarm video in web browser, this paper presented a solution that combines AJAX technology, GIS technology and video technology.The development, key technologies and implementation methods related to AJAX were discussed thoroughly; the development, key technologies and implementation methods based on the.NET/SuperMap software platform related to AJAX were investigated; the development, key technologies and implementation methods related to monitoring system were also discussed.The key technologies for applying AJAX in GIS system in WEB environment were discussed, and an implementation method of combining the AJAX technology, GIS technology and monitoring was presented.In this paper, an AJAX-based GIS monitoring system was designed and implemented, which provided the functions of combining GIS with automatic alarm and GIS with the video display. The design process was discussed in detail, with focus on the key technologies related the system implementation. Based on the prototype system realized, the versatility aspect of the system was conducted. By analyzing the division of modules, methods for achieving the versatility for the design and implementation of the system was proposed.Finally, the real-time aspect of the system was investigated. By analyzing three different Web refresh technologies and comparing with the actual data, the feasibility and superiority of the application of AJAX technology in this system were verified.
