Software, hardware, processed image, compacted data technology and fundamental theory of Geographic Information System (GIS) are making great progress, all of which push GIS advancing further. Now GIS is applied more widely in width and depth. The present article with a detail about definition, composition, function and developing trends of GIS described application in the field of ecology, such as compiling the distribution of species, predicting the dynamic change of population, making the protect strategy for biology, drawing the distribution of all kinds of environmental factors and building mathematics model between biological factors and changing environmental factors.As far as GIS is concerned, geodatabase is very important. It is not only fundamental for display, query, statistics, analysis and simulation of GIS, but also closely related to GIS performance and all kinds of operation. So spatial data model and spatial data structure related to geodatabase were described. On the basis of the above, two design schemes were in the present state.First was a query and display system for marine gastropod imposex and organotin compounds contamination along the Southeast Coast of China. The system was based on Legend Pentium 111(933), scanner(Uniscan M1600) and printer as hardware platform, ARC/INFO (Desktop) GIS software using component integrated scheme, AutoCAD, ArcView 3.2a, Windows 2000 operating system, MapObjects 2.0 module, Microsoft Access, and Visual Basic 6. 0 as software platform. In addition, ADO data access was the bridge for programme and database of Microsoft Access. The system also uses ShellExecute function-one of API functions of Microsoft-to extend data source.Second was a query and display system for the ecosystem in Zhelin Bay of Guangdong province based on Geographic Information System (GIS). Withthe aid of oriented-object thought and GeoDatabase data model oriented object, the system, which could edit, display, query, compute, analyze and so on, was founded on ARC/INFO (Desktop) GIS software, AutoCAD, Photoshop 6. 0> Windows 2000 operating system, SQL Server 7.0 and Visual Basic 6. 0 as software platform. It, which was taken by second developing method with integrated way, was based on ArcScene software. From the above practices, conclusions were as follows:(1) With the help of Geographic Information System technology, it is easier to display spatial information visually, such as Zhelin Bay and Southeast Coast of China, to zoom and pan image data randomly, to locate the viewing area quickly, to make query on spatial data and attribute data in many ways, to edit and revise geodata effectively, to compute and analyze geographical information simply, to export research result by many methods and to make theme maps dynamically with vivid contents.(2) Several theme maps have been made by using GIS technology and characteristics of the research project . The theme maps were as follows: geographic distribution of RPS imposex index of Thais clavigera in Shantou Harbor, geographic distribution of YDS imposex index of Thais clavigera in Shantou Harbor, geographic distribution of RPS imposex index of Thais clavigera in Zhanjiang Bay and geographic distribution of YDS imposex index of Thais clavigera in Zhanjiang Bay. We can analyze imposex difference of biology between Shantou Harbor and Zhanjiang Bay through the above theme maps.(3) Comparision to the imposex index of YDS and RPS for marine gastropod in Shantou Harbor and Zhanjiang Bay, we can draw such a conclusion that imposex extent for marine gastropod in Zhanjiang Bay is greater than that of Shantou Harbor, which is related to the location and water flow of Zhanjiang Bay. In addition, Zhanjiang Bay is a bigger military harbor, which also contributes to higher imposex index.(4)As matter shows, it is an effective way in the query and display system for ecology information in Zhelin Bay by using oriented-object developing method.In a word, with the aid of GIS technology, making research on marine biology pollu...
