Our society has already entered the information age, and theinformation technology has made huge influence on the development ofearthquake science. In the field of earthquake research a lot ofinformation network and data sharing center have been built, and theseinformation systems provide a rich earthquake data and informationsource for earthquake researchers, the government department, and thepublic. With the rapid development of Internet and software technologyand the increasing need of software infrastructure for national earthquakedisaster reduction, the current information systems gradually dissatisfypeople's needs. Based on the actual demand of earthquake system, thispaper utilizes the advanced software architecture and latest technology indesigning the software to develop an all-purpose earthquake informationplatform and framework, which provides an important technical supportfor the relevant institutes and departments to build information systemand platform with more practicality, convenience, efficiency, andformidable function.Compared with other information systems, this all-purposeearthquake information platform has the following advantages:1. Versatility: The system is composed of many independencemodules, and users can configure these modules to increase orremove functions.2. Uniform environment: The system runs without any change onany combination of software and hardware environment.3. Low cost: The system fully uses existing software and hardware,thus reduces investment.4. Support international interface: The system has both Chineseand English interface. When a visitor comes from a Chinesebrowser, the system will serve the Chinese interface, while whenvisited by an English browser, the system will provide Englishinterface. Other language interfaces can be added to the systemby a few simple instructions.5. Extensibility: The system is convenient for customizeddevelopment. It can also update an original framework to a moreformidable system which provides many kinds of functions suchas data processing, real time monitoring and so on.The main contents of this paper are summarized as the following:1. The earthquake information system is a multidisciplinary resultbetween earthquake science and information technology.2. Current status of domestic and international earthquakeinformation systems and the trend of information technologyhave been analyzed. The paper points out that the future designof our earthquake information system should be based on B/Smodel, which provides data collection, monitoring, dataprocessing, real-time publication of data and information, and soon.3. The detailed analysis of all-purpose earthquake informationplatform contains system goals, principles of design, systemcharacteristics, functional analysis, and so on. The overallframework and database logical structure are designed based theprevious analysis, and the system functional framework isconstructed by user interface framework(UI), internationalizedlanguage support framework, security and jurisdictionconfirmation, system function modules, and so on. Logicalframework is constructed by presentation layer, business layer,and persistence layer. The technology framework is constructedby Struts framework, Java Bean, and Hibernate framework.4. According to the system database logical structure, SQLstatements are programmed. Programs and configured files arecreated by modular programming techniques.5. The system is developed and demonstrated under theenvironment constructed by Windows XP, Sun JDK, TomcatWeb Service and MySQL database.6. An example is given on how to use the platform.
