Along with GIS technology, and digital mapping technology, electronic map production is becoming increasingly convenient, and being applied widely day by day, in order to guarantee the uniformity and the accuracy of cognized geographic information, and achieve the information and resources shared, it is urgent to promote the guideline or standard for electronic topographic map symbol. After researching the cartography theory, the text analyses the problem of the electronic map symbol system what have appeared, and mainly researches the symbol system of the electronic topographic map which is a kind of electronic map, then provides some research thoughts for studying the electronic topographic map symbol system.This paper firstly studied the theoretical foundation of the electronic map symbol design, and discussed the Semiology theory, visual perception theory and aesthetics theory of the map to effect in symbol design of the electronic map.Then the author analyzed the deficiency when the symbol system of the paper topographic map is applied directly to the electronic topographic map, and put forward the basic principle of the electronic topographic map symbol system construction, according to the above principle revised some symbols of paper topographic map, and set up preliminary electronic topographic map symbol system form; and then studied the composition law of the electronic topographic map symbol.The method of visual perception experiment was introduced in the forth part of this paper,and the data processing method that this subject adopts was put forward——fuzzy generalvaluation method, electronic topographic map symbol system form had been revised based on electronic topographic map vision of user experiment.In the fifth part, developed the symbol library based on the electronic topographic map symbol system, and optimized the symbol library with GDI+, obviously improving the quality and tempo to draw symbol.Finally, the author summarized the research results and put forward the existing problem to further study.
