The increasing development of GIS both in the fields of theory and software research, coupled with its expanding range of utilization, the spatial analysis function for GIS has greatly drawn people's attention. Currently, GIS has evolved from database stage to analysis stage which demands a higher and newer requirement for GIS spatial analysis. As a result, the research into GIS spatial analysis becomes a topic of great importance and challenge, which is the starting point of this thesis. The basic concept, the basic function and the current research situation home and abroad of GIS spatial analysis are clarified in this dissertation firstly. Then, based on the detailed analysis of the basic characteristics of spatial data, analysis of spatial data model, and analysis of spatial data structure as well as spatial data index, the basic methods of GIS spatial analysis are discussed. Next, by means of the processes of GIS spatial analysis, GIS spatial analysis model and its modeling methods are explored as the focus of the thesis. Furthermore, The plan for the spatial analysis modeling design and the realization and design of the spatial analysis modeling are analyzed with specific examples. Finally, based on analysis model, the realization of some key algorithms for the functionality of spatial analysis such as spatial query, buffer analysis etc., and GIS spatial analysis secondary development based on ArcGIS Engine are sudied. Proceeding from the theoretical framework, a GIS spatial analysis module is designed and realized. The research shows that, practical spatial analysis model can be built if GIS spatial analysis technology integrated with diagram modeling is used; accordingly, the basic spatial analysis function of GIS can be actualized, and improve the whole GIS function.
