Geographic Information System (GIS) is a combination of the space science and information science, it is involved many technologies such as geography, graphics, CAD, database technology. Since 1963, the world's first GIS was established by the Canadian measurement scientist-R.F Tomlinson, GIS experience the beginning development of the 1960s, the consolidation development of the 1970s, the application development of the 1980s, and after 1990s, its go to the vigorous development stage. Recently, the amount of data required to deal with is increasing, especially with the development of RS (Remote sensing) and GPS (Global Positioning System), the tradition GIS has been unable to meet the demand for spatial data handling, the future development trend of GIS is from software to services.With 2001, the outbreak of the conception of grid computing, academia and information technology field giving rise to an upsurge of the grid, in can make decentralized systems integration, make interoperability and information sharing come true, improve operational efficiency. The propose of grid computing has played a significant role in the develop of GIS, the application of grid technology in GIS, that is to say, the research and development of grid GIS based on the idea of grid computing technology, has become one of the greatest concern areas of GIS.Under the grid technology and grid theory, with the integration of GIS specific features, the article puts forward the identities conception of gird GIS. With the study of structure and key technologies of grid GIS, the article explores the development and application of grid GIS. The dissertation has mainly the following innovations:(1)With the integration of grid technology and GIS, the article puts forward the equation grid GIS conception from the technology view-"Gird GIS= GIS+ Grid+ Internet+ Middleware".(2)With the analysis of gird technology theory and grid structure, the article puts forward the framework structure of grid GIS-"double and 2D grid GIS architecture".(3)With the key study of grid GIS integration in different distributed computing environment, the article puts forward the software system structure of grid GIS that suitable to the distributed information integration platform-"gird middleware as its core".(4)With the profound study of gird GIS architecture and key technologies, the article proposes and designs the model grid GIS environment, and tries to build a grid GIS application example. Lastly, the article make the feasibility analysis.
