With the rapid development of some academic disciplines and technologies, theusing of GPS, GIS, wireless communications and some other technologies now havebecame increasingly mature. However, transportation issues will be solved with somenew ideas. Actually, in 21st century, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is a newconcept for the current transport problems, and becomes a mainstream during thedevelopment of modern traffic. Vehicle navigation system is an important componentof ITS, and has found its widely using in transportation area. And some advancedtechnologies as positioning and geographic information technology are used as toolsfor its functions. The ITS will provide drivers with the optimal route, vehicle locationand the surrounding facilities information, and guide vehicles safe, rapid, andaccurate arrival task. Indeed, western countries already have some mature products ofthe vehicle navigation system in the practical application. However, local research ofthis field is still in initial phase. Facing the prospect and huge potential domesticmarket demand, the study of vehicle navigation is highly necessary and urgent.Firstly, the development of intelligent transportation system in the home andabroad is introduced in this thesis, and the role and significance of the navigationsystem is elaborated throughout the whole ITS as well. Then, the basic theory andcorrelative technologies of in-vehicle navigation is discussed involving several partsas following: components of GPS, location theory, coordinate system and coordinatetransformation method, mobile GIS, electronic map and so on. ComGIS is thendescribed as well as the way of the software development based on ComGIS, andrealization of vehicle navigation is given which combines electronic map, real-timepositioning, etc. Finally, the accomplished functions of Navigator are analyzed, and the problemsis discussed requiring further studies.
