The GAT High-accuracy Magnetic Suspension Gyro Total Station is developed by the Institute of Survey and Space Information in Chang An University and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation'16 th Institute, which has the domestic independent intellectual property rights and high accuracy automatic orientation. The instrument has overcome the much technical difficulties in the structural design of the gyroscopic theodolite and creatively applies the magnetic levitation technology, the non-contact optical torque feedback control technology and lots of domestic and foreign advanced technology to the GAT for the actual need of surveying. But, at present there has no a practical approach to assess the precision of the equipment at home and abroad.Based on this, this paper designed two methods of assessing precision of the GAT Gyro Total Station: one is to compare the measurement results with that of the total station, obtain the comparative value, and then get MSE (mean square error) that based on the theory of error; other is to compare the measurement results with that of the GPS, obtain the comparative value, and then get MSE that based on the theory of error. It can use the two MSE to comprehensive analysis the directional accuracy of Gyro Total Station. We make the compare experiments with the GAT Gyro Total Station in Chang'an University Weishui campus, get the better conclusions, and use the Gyromat2000 to make the same experiment. Compared the two experimental results, it shows that the GAT Gyro Total Station has the same directional precision with Gyromat2000 which is made in GermanFinally, compared the results of the Jinping hydropower station tunnel through project and the Xiamen Xiang'an the Cross Harbour Tunnel through project, it also proves that the methods of assessing precision of the GAT Gyro Total Station have the high reliability.
