Generally, the butanol and octanol are together briefly called butyl-octyl alcohol which are important raw materials in organic chemical engineering. They are mainly used in manufacturing the plasticizer such as dibutyl(octyl) phthalate and fatty di-acid ester. They are widely used in the production of the various plastic and rubber, and also are the raw material of manufacturing butyl (octyl)aldehyde, butyric(octylic) acids, butyl(octyl)amime and butyl(octyl) lactate and so on . They are not only the solvents of resin, paint, binding agent and defoamer in selecting mineral, but also the extractor of fat, medicine (like antibiotic, hormone and vitamin) and perfume, and the additives of alkyd resin paint. In addition, they are used in diesel oil additives, synthetic lubricater, antioxidant, defoamer, and still in the paper slurrication, photo, latex and so on.Butyl and octyl alcohol are mainly made by hydrogenating the corresponding aldehyde. The unit and the catalyst of aldehyde hydrogenation in our country are all imported. This will not only cost a large amount of money but also increase producing cost and lower products' competition ability. We coprecipitate several primary compounds: copper nitrate, zinc nitrate, sodium carbonate and aluminum nitrate to produce the catalyst used in hydrogenating aldehyde. Through the reaction on micro-reactor and 300ml reactor, we can evaluate the properties of catalysts and the influence of the prompters to catalysts. After magnifying the experiment according to industry scale and doing side line experiment on Butyl-octyl alcohol unit in Daqing Petroleum Chemical Engineering Company. The results showed that the VAH gas phase aldehyde hydrogenation catalyst has good magnifying property. The physi-chemical properties of the catalysts prepared in industrial scale and evaluation of hydrogenation stimulation are accordant to the experiment results of lab. The catalyst has satisfied the request of catalyst's technique specifications. The catalytic performance of VAH catalysts for gas phase hydrogenating of aldehyde excel those of imported catalysts G-66B-1, it can compete to the catalyst OXO which is a new type of imported catalyst. What's more important is that it can bring some merits to the reaction. For example: (1) The yield of product can get above 98.5% and the amount of unsaturated components reduces in large-scale. (2) The temperature of hotspots on the catalyst bed is stable and the hotspots remove downward slowly. The catalyst has a good thermal stability. (3) The quality of butanol and octanol can satisfy excellent class of national standard. (4) The catalyst can cause low pollution because the drainage of polluted water can be controlled to the index request.The experiment of the two thousand or more hours side line run prove that VAH catalyst has excellent properties and stability. It can completely take place of those imported catalysts used in hydrogenation of aldehyde to butyl and/or octyl alcohol unit.
