The SPKM (Serial-Parallel Machine Tool) is a new type of machine tool developed in the recent years. It is consisted of serial and parallel mechanism which increases SPKM' s displacement and rotary angle, as well as stiffness, accuracy and feed speed. But the SPKM is difficult to control.This paper begins from analysing the difference among traditional machine tool, parallel kinematics machine tool and SPKM. It then analyses features of the SPKM, gets the features of the control system of the SPKM, and establishes the basic theory relevant to developing the SPKM' s CNC system.CNC system based on PC is a chief direction in which the technology of CNC is developing. This paper introduces the current situation of open CNC system, and figures out the possibility and necessity of using open CNC system to develop the SPKM' s CNC system. Meanwhile, we can easily realize the general NC program for SPKM with the interface programme of UG/CAM.The hardware of CNC system is made up of IPC (Industrial Personal Computer), PMAC (Programable Multiple Axes Controller), DPRAM (double port RAM), AC servo driver, motor spindle controller etc. This paper explicatesfunctions and features of all components in detail.The software CNC system of SPKM is developed with Visual C++ in the operation system of Windows98. It can be divided into two parts: NC processing software and user-interface software. The NC processing software deals with how to apply existent NC codes or CLSF (Cutter Location Source File) to the SPKM, while user-interface software with how to realize the function of man-machine conversation.
