Eleven solid complexes of rare earth perchlorate with phenyl-acetylmethylene sulfoxide (L) and six-different proportional mixed complexes (Tb3+ mixed by Er3+) of rare earth perchlorate with the ligand have been synthesized and characterized. By elemental analysis, coordination titration and TGA studies. The composition of the complexes were suggested as RE (ClO4)3·L5·2H20(RE=La, Pr, Nd, Sm , Eu, Tb, Dy, Er, Tm, Yb, Y) and (TbxEry) (ClO4)3·L5·2H20(x:y=0. 999:0.001, 0.995:0.005, 0.990:0.010, 0.950:0.050, 0.900:0.100, 0.800:0.200) respectively. IR spectra , MS and 1HNMR studies indicated that the ligands are bonded with RE (III) ions by the oxygen atom in sulfinyl group while the oxygen atom in carbonyl group is not bonded. The Molar conductivities in acetonesolution indicate that two inorganic anions ClO4- are coordinated and the other is not. Fluorescence spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes show that ligand has sensitized the fluorescence of Eu3+ and Tb3+ by descending the symmetry of RE(III) complexes. In addition, the fluorescence emission intensity of Tb3+ was descended in the mixed complexes (Er3+ was mixed), Er3+ has a quenching effect to the complexes of Tb3+.
