The term of "City" is a compound ecological system. In order to develop further ,it must resort to a certain ecological support to keep the fundamental strcture and function. The ecological support system can offer the most fundamental support like resources, energy sources and space, etc, and adjust the speed, scade and direction of the city's development. This paper mainly talks about the significance and necessity of ecological support system of the city which exists under the circumstance of the rapid development and expansion of the city. The author combines the static and dynamic methods to study Baotou city on the basis of the understanding of natural environment, social and economic state of this city, appling administrative levels of support level, coordinating quality, the ability of development to constructing target system, setting up research model. Meanwhile, the author thoroughly analyzes and evaluates the development of the ecological support system from 1992 to 2001 in Baotou according to the theory of geography, economics, ecology about city and so on, and with the help of the software-GIS, social and scientific software, measure^nathematical statistics. Then the author points out some restricting elements of the ecological support system in Baotou and analyzes the main problems profoundly. The study of development is put forward based on the above analysis. The purpose is to know the problem of the city development properly, to promote the construction of the ecological support system of city and offer some pratical thoughts for the city's carrying out the sustained development strategy through the analysis and evaluation of the comprehensive level about the ecological support system of Baotou.
