The Tripterygium wilfordii hook f. is one of the important Chinese herbal medicines. Its effective components like terpene and alkaloid can be used to cure rheumatoid arthritis. So far, the typical process to produce Tripterygium wilfordii includes the following units: recycling leaching, evaporation, extraction, column chromatogram.The relation between the concentration of the total alkaloids and time in the recycling leaching column was measured, where the concentration of the total alkaloids was analyzed by ultraviolet spectrophotometry. A mathematical model was proposed to describe the performance of the recycling leaching column:The model can simulate the operation data of the recycling leaching column well. Furthermore, the recycling leaching unit was optimized by the model, and a new operation procedure was proposed to leach the total alkaloids from Tripterygium wilfordii hook f..The evaporation unit was also studied, and its operation data were measured.
