Chinese traditional folk-furniture composes the important part of Chinese traditional furniture, which is created by common people and is highlighted by their daily lives and plain vernacular spirit of creation. Chinese traditional furniture develops to its zenith by Ming-style furniture and it features the high technique and the internal cultural meanings.China is one pro-industrial country and has been undergoing the transitional stage, from traditional handicraft to indusralization. We have to critically sum up and preserve Chinese history and culture, which deeply influences the course of modernization.Nowadays, people always mix up ancient folk-furniture and traditional furniture. It is difficult to divide them simply from their formation systems. The key point of the article is to discuss what the way of producing folk-furniture looks like in different stages of history and to explain "folk-furniture producing activity" and its influence on modern society. That is, hereby we define the concept "folk-furniture" from its systematic production, not from its age, appearance and geographic environment.During one century from modern homeyard handmade way of production to mechanization, the connotation of folk-furniture has been changing. With the exception of south-east coastal area and some inland areas integrating the system of modern furniture industry, there are large amount of small-or-middle-sized furniture factories in the form of traditional hand-made production this day. In the article, their way of production is listed in the way of production of modern folk-furniture. While describing the development of Chinese traditional handicraft industry, the article focuses on its features of way of production: marginal market, small-sized, fixed types of design, non-systematic organization of production and so on.Through the analysis of the transition of Chinese modern hand-made production industry, it discusses the constraints and rationality of small-or-middle-sized furniture factory featuring traditional hand-made crafts. On one hand, its constraints show in all-in-one-factory way of production organization, less technology investment, low-level standardization, local consumption market, intensely dependent on local economy; on the other hand, its rationality lies in its fully adaptable to local development steps, countryside market, "middle technology" , cheap labour, developed systems of transferring information and materials in modern society and the return of traditional handicraft.
