Open architecture is a main direction of the current numerical control technical development. The open structure based on the motion controller is one of the structure modes of the Open Numerical Control System. According to the project "special Lathe-Mill NC Machine with Seven-Five Axis for Large-scale Naval Vessel Screw", some important technologies are studied and discussed, including the structure of Open NC system based on the motion controller, Systematic communication API and logical control functions. Firstly, according to OSACA model, an Open NC System model is built up. The interfaces of system modules are analyzed. The software and hardware platform is built up. Secondly, according to the definition and sort of the API in OSACA model, classify the communication methods into two catalogs: communication between the systematic function modules and communication between the systematic function module and the motion controller. The interface between the systematic function module and the communication control module is studied. The communication and dispatcher between the systematic function modules is realized by multi-process communication mechanisms supplied from windows 2000. The interface between the systematic function modules and motion controller is analyzed and the current communication API and function API designed. Thirdly, based on UMAC motion controller, using the PLC functions inside the UMAC, the logic control of system is realized. The functions, including the M, S, T Functions, the control function of planes on the lathe and the other modules functions are realized. Finally, according to the special requirement of the special Lathe-Mill NC Machine with Seven-Five Axis for large-scale naval vessel screw, the design and development of its numerical control system is realized by using above-mentioned research results. The structure and configuration of this system are described, the special control functions are realized.
