Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer is a new kind of hydrophilic membrane material. The hydrophilic groups on the chain of EVAL were contributed to the good hydrophilicity of EVAL. The -CH2- groups are favored of the strength of membranes. The structure of membrane which had the porous surface and the sponge surface was prepared by controlled phase inversion process, and exhibited high permeability, large inner-surfaces, good hydrophilic performance and high strength. Therefore the Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer is a potential material for the separation of protein.Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer MF membranes were prepared by the phase inversion process. The membranes exhibited good hydrophilic performance and high water flux with highly loose and inter-connective microstructure, which would be potential for the separation of protein. Several factors affecting membrane formation and characteristics (e.g. polymer concentration, additives, and temperature) were studied.Ion exchange resin particle/EVAL hybrid membrane were prepared by the way of phase inversion. In this process the Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer was used as basic materials, ion exchange resin was used as functional particles, and all of them were mingled physically. The ion exchange resin loaded membrane has good hydrophilicity, high pure water flux, and high rejection of BSA. There were no ion exchange resin particles leaked out.In this work NMP was used as solvent which has a relatively lower polarity to get ion exchange resin loaded EVAL membranes. The structure of this membrane was loose, pores on top surface of membrane were open. The contact angle was about 20°. Therefore the hybrid membrane had a good hydrophilicity., and a high water flux. Adsorption capacity of hybrid membrane with 50%wt resin of BSA was 45 mg BSA/g membrane.
