Sustainable river basin management is a very extensive research topic, which includes the proper distribution of water resources, water pollution control, social and economic aspects etc. Water pollution control, which is the study topic of this paper, is one important part in sustainable river basin management. The management of water pollution to achieve water quality in the era of active economic development is essential. To realize optimal distribution and effective protection of water resources, controlling water pollution quantitatively within river segments is an important scientific method of achieving this goal. This thesis addresses the environmental impacts on the Huayuankou river segment in China due to economic development activities within the basin. Available data and water quality standards are used to assess the major sources of pollution and the main pollutants resulting from human activities within the basin. The seriousness of pollution is also assessed. Mathematical models were used to compute the water assimilative capacity of river segments, upon which a plan is proposed for controlling pollution in the basin. This thesis involves introduction (background, research purposes and contents, state of art of relative researches), carrying capacity of water environment for basin development, pollution control in the Yellow River (pollution sources, water quality status, and recommendations for pollution control), conclusions and recommendations. The one dimensional model was utilized in this research to calculate the water assimilative capacity for basin management. From this study, it is concluded that domestic waste water is found to be the major source of pollution, though industrial effluents also hold a high potential for future pollution. CODCr and NH3-N are the main pollutants. The main recommendations for water pollution control in the studied reach include total pollutant load control, administrative management, laws and regulations etc.
