The research about aerobic granular sludge mainly comes from the granulation of anaerobic sludge, recently the researcher have been cognizant of the aerobic sludge granulation because of the microbial self-immobilization. This paper cultivated the aerobic granular sludge in the two parallel SBR reactors which were inoculated aerobic sludge and anaerobic granular sludge respectively using synthetic wastewater. The two SBR reactors succeeded in cultivation of the aerobic granular after the reactors operated 45d by controlling the COD organic load, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and superficial upflow air velocity.The two SBR reactorsed remain under the same condition, two kinds of mature granular sludge were cultivated when COD organic load is 3.95~4.06 kg/(m3·d), superficial upflow air velocity is 0.0218m/s, HRT is 6h. The two SBR reactors' biological degradation ability variety in the process was studied by monitoring the COD, TN, and TP of the effluent. The difference of the two kinds of aerobic granular sludge formation process is also studied.The specific gravity of the aerobic granular sludge 1 and aerobic granular sludge 2 was 1.004 and 1.006, water content of two kinds granular sludge is 98.3% and 97.2%,the SOUR of the two kinds of aerobic granular sludge is 2239 gO2kgMLSS-1h-1 and19.00 gO2kgMLSS-1h-1.The aerobic granular sludge l's color is yellow, diameter is2~5mm, the structure is fluffy and there is great deal of filamentous bacteria, but the aerobic granular sludge 2's structure is very compactness. The detail microstructure of the two kinds of the aerobic granular sludge ware examined using SEM. There is lot of filamentous bacteria and round-like species in aerobic granular sludge 1, and the diameter of the filamentous and round-like bacteria is 3 ~ 4 μm and 0.6 μ m respectively. The aerobic granular sludge 2 consists of round-like and rod-like species. The diameter of the round-like is 0.6~0.9 μ m. the length and the diameter of the rod-like species is 1.8~2.4 μ m and 1 μ m respectively.
