Catalytic and cracking process is one of the most important parts in petroleum secondary processing. Because of its complexity, large quantity of control loops and its continuity, the product quality , yield and so on are closely related to the stability of the system .Frequent changes in crude oil type and quality often make FCC fluctuate, and that makes it significant to evaluate the system working status and diagnose the fault while giving the expert's proposal to deal with the situation, which help to optimize the process. While FCC process is a multivariable, nonlinear and coupled plant ,it is of great difficulty to analyses and make the proper action by system modeling . Expert system can integrate the math arithmetic and operation experience in controlling engineering by making use of expert knowledge and simulating expert's inferencing process ,while avoiding making accurate model. Combining expert system with configuration software can gain good monitoring effect by utilizing the configuration software's strong function in data collecting, handling, dynamic picture of the process and so on. Expert system technique provides effective method to monitor those plants whose processes are difficult to know exactly by using the knowledge–based structure and illuminative logic. The widespread use of computer in process industry greatly enhances application of intelligent system in process industry. On the basis of the complete of system configuration and regular control, fractionating tower monitoring expert system is developed by using shell CLIPS, which greatly shortens the developing cycle.The main work that the writer has done is as follows:i. Finishing the whole configuration of FCC system using force control software , realizing the function of the dynamic picture of process, alarming, trend showing, report and etc, regular control such as PID control are also accomplished.ii. Expert system for fractionating tower monitoring is developed by using develop tool CLIPS, with which knowledge base is constructed. Knowledge is presented using rule-based method. Forward inferencing is achieved, so is backward inferencing by simulating forward one.iii. Research in its combination between force-control software and expert system is made.iv. A website majoring in enterprise informationzation is constructed, information about the writer's work is present , and distant monitoring, analysis and evaluation are achieved.
