With the improvement of the high accelerated ammunition, more requirements are needed to meet for reliable function of the ammunition. Delay composition has a very important effect on the reliable function of the ammunition. The combustion characteristics under high overload are different from those found in static experiments. Therefore, investigation on the combustion characteristics of delay composition under high acceleration is in great demand.The boron type delay composition column was tested under overload with a high acceleration and the combustion process was memorized by high speed photography. The results indicated that the layer-type outcomes were observed in the combustion process when the content of B was more than 12%, and that the outcomes were liquid sinters when the content of B was 8%. Overload improved the burning rate, which increased with the augment of overload under a definite density.Aimed at gasless delay composition and gas delay composition, the physical and the mathematic models of the combustion process under high overload were presented respectively.The combustion process of the delay composition was calculated numerically by MATLAB. The results indicated that the static temperature distribution of the combustion wave of the delay composition was in accord with the model. The burning rate decreased with increasing the density. For the delay composition with a constant density, the burning rate increased with the overload under high overload. The effect of overload on the combustion process under high overload accorded with the experimental result.
