Piezoelectric smart structure has the ability to sensing and actuating by using the piezoelectric effect. This kind of structure has many advantages such as fast reaction, self-diagnosing and self-recovery and so on. Now it has been one of the hotspots in the field of smart structures. For its many advantages, composite laminate has also been used commonly in the engineering structures. However, the thermal load has a great influence on the composite laminate plate which is often working in the complex conditions, therefore, how to control its shape and deformation is a hotspot of research. On basis of the first order shear deformation theory, a finite element analysis method has been developed to study the deformation of composite laminate plate considering thermal load and the problem of deformation compensation of piezoelectric smart structure using PZT actuators. In this paper, the author firstly commended on characteristic of piezoelectric smart structure and the actuality of the abroad and domestic development; secondly, the element theory and formulation of the composite laminated plate using finite element method were presented; then the constitutive relationship of piezoelectric materials was introduced and a finite element analysis model of composite laminated plate with distributed PZT actuators under thermal load was established and a corresponding governing equation was deduced. Finally, from typical numerical analysis, the deformation of composite laminated plate under thermal load, shape control of composite laminated plate using PZT actuators and the thermal deformation compensation of composite laminated plates using PZT actuators and the optimization of voltages applied to each actuator were discussed. Numerical results and discussions show that thermal load has a great influence on the smart structure and high precision shape control of composite laminated plate could be achieved by using PZT actuators. The methods and conclusions provided in the paper have some reference value for the shape control of smart structures and the deformation of composite laminated plates under thermal, mechanical and electrical loads.The dissertation is a sub-part of the project of Science Foundation of Dalian University of Technology "The mechanism of piezoelectric smart composite laminated plates and shells with damage", Grant No. SFDUT07011.
