The core of sustainable development is to confirm whether the subsistence of human is in the bearing capacity range of ecosystem. In order to assess whether a region is in a state of sustainable development or not, a quantitative research of current situation is necessary. Quantitative measurement of sustainable development, is also the key to sustainable development research nowdays.Hubei Provincial Government started up building Wuhan urban in November 2003. The State Council ratified Wuhan urban agglomeration as agglomeration an comprehensive reform experimental zone, for a resource-conserving and environment- friendly society. The development and construction of Wuhan urban agglomeration will certainly bring the chang of natural resources, cultural resources and ecological environment. How to control the intensity of development and construction, protector and prasence ecological resources, improve ecological environment has always been an emphasis focus of research on the Wuhan urban agglomeration sustainable development. Therefore, quantitative study is important to the sustainable development of Wuhan urban agglomeration. With the reference of the ecological concept of productive land, quantifies all kinds of indicators and describes various natural resources. With the reference of coefficients such as balanced faction production factors ect. Uniformly, area of different types of ecological productive land in different regions can be summed up and analyzed comparatively. This paper first introduces the theoretical background and of the proposal Wuhan urban agglomeration. Based on the introduction of the concept of ecological footprint, calculating method, and the current research results, after inquiring relevant statistical yearbook, the basic statistics of Wuhan urban agglomeration in 1995-2006 are calculated and of ecological footprint of Wuhan urban agglomeration is are analyzed. Firstly, the calculating process of the ecological footprint in 2006 to illustrated to explain the calculating method of ecological footprint model, then the ecological footprint and ecological carrying capacity of the nine cities are calculated respectively, in order to find out the ecological deficit of each city and the ecological deficit / surplus of six kinds of land types. Thirdly, dynamic analyses of ecological footprint in Wuhan urban agglomeration and analyses relevant to economic from 1995 to 2006 are processed. The results show that Wuhan urban agglomeration is in the state of ecological deficit and in an increasing trend the 9 cities in 2006 are also in a state of ecological deficit, while Ezhou's ecological deficit was biggest. The development trend of ecological footprint, ecological carrying capacity and ecological deficit from 2007 to 2020 is forecasted. The results show that the ecological deficit is a growing trend, because the growth speed of ecological footprint per capita is far more greater than the of ecological carrying capacity per capita.Lastly, this paper analyses the causes of ecological deficit, proposes suggestions of alleviating ecological deficit and fulfilling sustainable development, and also bring forward spatical pattern of ecological deficit / surplus on macro-structure of Wuhan urban agglomeration, All these builders give clearer evaluation whether the regions of Wuhan urban agglomeration are on sustainable states, also give the a strong guiding significance for management and planning tasks in the future.
