With the development of nation's economy, dependency on mine and coal resources is continuously increased, thereby inducing more mine accidents. Therefore, the convenient and swift safety monitoring and searching system with accurate positioning capability is becoming especially important when mine accidents happen.The national and international mine safety monitoring system and the safety requirements are deeply investigated in this paper. Based on the analysis of the drawbacks of systems available on the market, A new embedded mine safety monitoring system is proposed for providing miner positioning and wireless search and rescuing functions at the same time. This paper investigated the ZIGBEE wireless technology and the application techniques on the mining industry. A underground mining communication methodology based on the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol MAC network and ZIGBEE networks is proposed in this paper. At the same time, based on the pragmatic requirements of the mining industry, a underground miner local area positioning methodology based on the Wince technology is also proposed in this paper. The system positioning and wireless search and rescue functions are implemented by selecting the proper chip, developing the driver program for the Radio-Frequency card and Wince embedded operating system, and developing the top-level application program by C. Finally, The system functions are successfully tested, indicating that the system fulfilled the mine safety monitoring and underground personal real time positioning and wireless search rescue requirements.The mine safety monitoring and wireless search and rescue system proposed in this paper has the advantages such as higher performance-to-cost ratio, better real time response, more versatile functions as compared to the common single-function positioning system. It can effectively enhance the monitoring and management of underground miner.
