Due to the simple and machinery operating mode are always used in the Conventional biological sewage treatment process, the energy loss and waste (primarily electricity) is very serious. With the progress of automatic control theory and technology, particularly rapid development of computer technology since 1970's, some new sewage treatment process based on biological methods (such as SBR) gradually replaced the traditional process. People start to make some deeper research on the microbial metabolism in the mechanism in sewage treatment system and try to transform the system use of more advanced automatic control technology and concepts, so as to achieve more energy conservation and more efficiently.Developed countries put a lot of money and research efforts to enhance the monitoring, operation and management of sewage treatment facilities after the secondary sewage treatment is universal, computer control, alarm, calculating and instantaneous record are implemented. Recently, many scholars focus to the study of intelligent control systems, including fuzzy control, neural control, learning control and expert control and some of them have made progresss in researching.Research and application on control systems started late in China. Automatic control systems were used in wastewater treatment plant till 1990's and mostly imported expensive complete sets of equipment. Some of these equipment do not completely apply with our actual needs. Therefore, how to design the control system that can adapt to requirements of our wastewater treatment plant is an urgent task for us.This topic is based on Fu jian province Long Hai Wastewater Treatment Plant phase III project, try to develop an efficiency and economy automatic control system that adapted to local development and meet the goals of energy conservation. This paper gives various types of control modes and features of automatic control system which used in wastewater treatment systems around the world, and collected on the latest progress in the research of automatic control mode made by the domestic and foreign experts and scholars. By analysis these examples and research results, combined with the features of ICEAS process which used by Jiao Mei Wastewater Treatment Plant, and formulate the energy-saving control strategies. This strategy is a kind of learning control system, not only effectively reduce energy consumption, but also do not need to use many expensive on-line instruments, in order to achieve best value for money. Then make software and hardware design, and ultimately put into practical application.
