The Study On The "Space Language" In The Furniture Design

The furniture is a substantial material which can be seen or touched. It usually contains some basic elements:line, surface, and solid shape etc. and they are jointed together according certain principles. When furniture is placed in a space, it will show its inherent space effect inevitably. Therefore, the spatial attributes of the furniture has two-fold:First, the spatial attributes of the ontological furniture, that is to occupy a certain space and has a special space (three-dimensional) constitution form; The second is the space characteristics which the furniture reflected in the space environment.On this basis, this article investigates the "space language" system of the furniture, and takes the space form language, technical language and the environment language of the furniture to be the three integral parts of the system. Space form language and technical language of the furniture mainly study the spatial attributes of the ontological furniture. The language of the space form mainly includes the basic formative elements which are point, line, surface and body, and the constructive principles of the space form. The language of the technique refers to the connection between the furniture shape design and the material, formation and techniques of the furniture, and raises the point of view that the technical language of the furniture supplies services to the space form language of the furniture. Environmental language of the furniture makes elaborate with the space environment attributes of the furniture as the starting point brings forth the "conversation" between furniture and the space environment. This paper analyses the interrelation of the furniture design with the inner space, urban environment, eco-environment, and human being. The article proposes that the furniture design should be to make the coordination of urban construction, pay more attention to the ecological environment as well as human emotional exchanges, and looks to the future furniture design.This paper aims at, on the foundation of the existing theories, implanting the "space thinking" into the furniture design, trying to understand the meaning of furniture design from a new perspective, to expand the thinking of design, to supplement and enrich the existing theories.
