Var compensation is an important approach for the power system operating stably. Due to its good performance, Advanced Static Var Generator with digital controller has become the major means of var control devices in power system, and the research of ASVG also become a hot topic in power system and automatic control area.In this paper, the recent advance of ASVG is presented firstly, the operation principle is analyzed in detail, and the mathematical model is accomplished. By using instantaneous reactive power method, var current can be measured quickly. In order to reduce steady-state error and improve output waveform, indirect control of current with closed loop is employed. This strategy actually is controlling amplitude and phase of output voltage to control var current. Taking the practice case into account, the SPWM modulation technique is proposed by adopting the symmetrical and regular sampling method to produce driving pulse of ASVG, and this method is discussed and analyzed in detail.Then, the structure of ASVG is designed, the IGBT was used in the power stage, and the TMS320F2812 DSP was adopted as a digital control system of ASVG. The system software based on blocking C programme including SPWM is also composed. By the use of powerful resource of DSP, such as fast data processing and integrated peripherals, the measuring, controlling, real-time calculating, parameter displaying and dynamic var compensation can be put into effect.Finally, the experimental research is carried on, the results are also presented, and the adjustable output voltage and current can be obtained. The whole design's availability and feasibility can be showed by all these works, and the good technological foundation for studying of ASVG is also provided.
