Bamboo bark bolus is a classic formula derived from the Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet), written by Zhongjing Zhang during the Han dynasty. Bamboo bark bolus is prepared using bamboo shavings, gypsum, cinnamon twig, licorice, and Bai Wei. In the Jin Gui Yao Lue, the "Ann zhong yi qi" method (tonify the middle and augment the Qi formula; hereafter referred to as the "yi-qi method") first appeared in one of the chapters describing the formula of bamboo bark bolus. Recent use of bamboo bark bolus has gone beyond its intended application of treating disease in ancient times. To date, bamboo bark bolus has been applied to treat various clinical conditions, including respiratory disease, digestive disease, mental illness, blood disorders, gynecological disease, and male-specific disease. This study examined recent research on bamboo bark bolus to analyze and summarize its clinical application. Ancient literature analyses have primarily centered on the narration in the Jin Gui Yao Lue by tracing the source of and analyzing the textual meaning written in the chapter sections to explore the composition, formula explanation, and drug compatibility of bamboo bark bolus. By contrast, contemporary literature analyses have focused on the therapeutic effect and mechanism of bamboo bark bolus on respiratory, digestive, gynecological, and male-specific diseases, as well as on the history of related pharmacological research. Therefore, combining contemporary clinical applications of bamboo bark bolus with the information presented in the Jin Gui Yao Lue is beneficial for clinical guidance. To analyze the physical benefits of yi-qi method, this study examined the therapeutic effects of bamboo bark bolus used in the yi-qi method, focusing on how bamboo bark bolus regulates and strengthens the middle-jiao (the midsection of the body, including spleen stomach, gall bladder, and liver). The findings of this study indicate that the research on the yi-qi method is crucial in guiding disease treatment. Furthermore, a comparison and analysis of the contents in the Jin Gui Yao Lue could elucidate Zhang’s thoughts on medication. However, many inadequacies remain in contemporary experimental research and clinical trial design relating to bamboo bark bolus.
