Investigation And Analysis On Mental Health Of Employees In Financial Institutions

Objective To realize the profiles of the mental health status of financial employees and risk factors at the present, then to provide some suggestions. Methods A selection of303financial employees from6financial institutions of5cities in China was investigated by "Self-Reporting Inventory of Physical and Psychological Health for the Financial Employees" including symptom personal information, medical history and check list90(SCL-90). Results Totally310questionnaires were sent out, and303qualified ones were collected, the response rate was97.7%. For the SCL-90, the total mean score was significantly different (P<0.05), and factor scores including somatization, obsession-compulsion, depression, anxiety and paranoidideation were all significantly different between financial employees and the national norm (P<0.05). Moreover, it was found that based on the different gender, the scores of the subscales including obsession-compulsion and depression were significantly different (P<0.05); based on the different title, the scores including the mean score and all the subscales were significantly different (P<0.05); based on the different service periods, all the scores except the subscale, psychoticism, were significantly different (P<0.05). In comparison to the employees from other industries, the scores of financial employees including the mean score and all the subscales were significantly higher than the scores of medical practitioners and civil servants (P<0.05), and the financials employees’ scores of the subscales including somatization, phobic anxiety and psychotism were significantly lower than the scores of teachers (P<0.05). This investigation also showed that3.6%of financial employees developed cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and coronary heart disease;30.0%of the sample population underwent chronic disease of digestive tract and0.3%had tumor (optimum). The prevalence rates of cervical syndrome, lumbar spondylosis and neurasthenia illness was22.1%,11.6%and5.6%, respectively, and the rate of sample population who felt cold and uncomfortable in the last week is58.1%. Except for cold symptoms and neurasthenia illness (P<0.05), the common illness prevalence rates were not significantly different between males and females. Moreover, The prevalence rates of chronic disease of digestive tract, cervical syndrome and neurasthenia illness were statistically different among the different financial industries (p<0.05); and based on the different service periods, the prevalence rates of cardiovascular diseases, chronic disease of digestive tract, tumor (optimum), cervical syndrome and lumbar spondylosis were all significant different (p<0.05); and among the different titles of employees, the prevalence rates of cardiovascular diseases and lumbar spondylosis were significant different (p<0.05). In addition,95%financial employees seldom take exercises (less than half hour per day). Conclusion It concluded that the level of the mental health status of financial employees was unsatisfactory and low. This investigation suggested that the mental health status should be improved by the cooperation of human resource management and individuals.
