Objective To study the expression of endometrial calcitonin (CT) messenger RNA during implantation period in infertile patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) receiving ovulation induction therapies. Methods The expression of endometrial CT mRNA in the putative window of implantation was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in anovulatory patients with PCOS who underwent ovulation induction therapies: 18 subjects of group A were given citrate(CC)/human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) therapies, and 19 subjects of group B were given CC/human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG)/HCG therapies. 22 infertile women with normal menstrual cycle for fallopian tubal or male factors were selected as control group. All the subjects had single mature ovum. Serum concentration of estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P) were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunization during implantation window, while the endometrial thickness measured by ultrasound B.Results The CT mRNA expressions in endometrium of implantation were observed both in women with normal menstrual cycle and PCOS patients. Semi-quantitative analysis of RT-PCR showed that the expressions of endometrial CT mRNA were 0.80±0.08, 0.81±0.09 and 0.87 ± 0.09 in group A, B and control group respectively. It was significantly weaker in PCOS patients both group A and group B as compared with that in control group (P<0.05). The expression of endometrial CT mRNA in group A was similar with that in group B (P>0.05). The significant differences of estrogen and progesterone levels as well as endometrial thickness were not found among the groups during implantation window (P>0.05). Correlation was not found between the estrogen and progesterone levels and the expression of endometrial CT mRNA in each...
