Objectives To investigate the expression and significance of survivin and p63 inhuman non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and to evaluate the relationshipbetween them. Methods The expressions of survivin and p63 in 76 patients with NSCLC tissuesand in 12 patients with normal lung tissues nearby the cancer tissues were analyzedwith immunohistochemical methods (S-P).Results survivin was expressed in 45 of 76 (59.2%). in contrast, normal lungtissues nearby the cancer tissues did not express. The expression of survivinprotein was closely related to cell differentiation, recurrence and prognosis(P<0.05), but not related to ages, gender, smoking, histological classification, thetumor size, TNM stages and lymph node involved (P>0.05). The positive rate ofp63 in NSCLC was 55.3%, and there was no expression of p63 in normal lungtissues nearby in 12 cases. The expressions of p63 were significantly differentbetween different histological types of non-small cell lung cancer(P<0.05), mainlyexpressing in squamous cell lung cancer. The level of positive expression of p63was not associated with ages, gender, smoking, cell differentiation, the tumor size,TNM stages, lymph node involved and recurrence (P>0.05). The expression ofsurvivin was correlated with p63 (P<0.01).Conclusions The expressions of survivin and p63 were abnormal in the majorityof NSCLC, and they between themselves may play a synergetic role in the processof carcinogenesis of NSCLC. The over-expression of survivin suggested the badprognosis in NSCLC. The over-expression of p63 may be a valuable marker ofdiagnosis in squamous cell lung cancer and in estimating squamous epitheliadifferentiation. Survivin and p63 may be a potential therapeutic target of gene inNSCLC.
