[Objective] : To investigate the changes in proportion of different types of glaucoma, distribution of genders and ages of hospitalized patients with glaucoma, especially primary one.[Methods] : 2337 cases in our Department of Ophthalmology from January 1994 toDecember2003 were classified by their diagnosis, sex and age. The proportion was calculated and the feature of changes in proportion was analyzed. The data were then compared between two periods, 1994.1 tol996.12 and 2001.1 to2003.12, and different phases of age. [Results] : 53.7% of the case were primary angle-closure glaucoma(PACG), while 29.2%,15.2% and 1.88% of them were primary open angle glaucoma(POAG), secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma, respectively. During the period January 1 994 to December 1996,acute primary angle-closure glaucoma (aPACG) and chronic primary angle-closure glaucoma (cPACG) constituted 30.4% and 39.7% Of all primary glaucoma respectively, while during January 2001 to December 2003 the constitutive percentage of aPACG and cPACG was 23.9% and 37.9% respectively. The statistical examination confirms the significance of the change of aPACG , cPACG and POAG. The statistical comparison of the proportions of secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma between January 1994 to December 1996 and January 2001 to December 2003 shows no significant change. The median ages of aPACQ cPACG and POAG were 64.9, 66.6 and 38.9 during January 1994 to December 1996, while they were 66.1, 64.6 and 44.0 during January 2001 to December 2003 respectively.I Conclusions 1 : Primary glaucoma is still the main part of hospitalized patients with glaucoma, with PACG constituting the greater part. However, POAG seems to have risen during those years, the possible causes include changes in clinical operation, diagnosis, refractive errors, systemic situation, environment, and heredity, as well as social economic factors, etc. The rising of the median age of patients with PACG may be all effect of aging.
