With the popular regression to nature all over the world, more and more people beilieve that natural products will be the best choices to keep healthy and cure diseases. Traditional medicines have been utilized in more than 120 countries and other areas now. Some medicinal plants which are sold as OTC medicine in drug stores have been registered in some European countries (France 196, Germany 128). FDA has acceptted herb medicine as mestoresdical insurance items instead of some nutrients and medicine-substituents. The world faces a new challange to realize CTM's modernization and internationalization.Fructus Broussonetiae is the dried mature fruit of Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent., whose oringinal resources are very abundant in China. For more than one thousand years it has been used as a traditional medicine which is collected in every edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia on account of its great effects of cleaning hepatic-heat , treating ophthalmic disorders and invgorating lung and kidney. Morever Fructus Broussonetiae also has the effects of strengthening with tonics and lengthening life in Chinese material medica . Till today, the main active components keep out of our knowledge.To screen antioxidants and anti-aging agents from traditional herb medicine and discover the abundant original resource of Fructus Broussonetiae, in China, then to set up its quality assessment system and to elucidate its mechanism of invigorating the kidney and seek its antioxidation and antiaging constituents, serial studies of Fructus Broussonetiae were carried out with the financial help of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No.30400595) and Shanghai-Unilever Research & Development Fund (No.03121).Through the historical and herbalogical study of Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent.and Fructus Broussonetia, we cofirm that Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Vent, is earlier recorded before Shengnong's Herbal and firstly recorded as medicine by Ming Yi Bie Lu, which was classified as high grade within that.The name Chushizi was firstly recorded in Su Wen Bing Ji Bao Ming Ji.There are some differencess among Chushi, Chutao and Chushizi, that Chushi is not seed but fruit of Broussonetia papyrifera . There are some errors about it in some books such as Xin hua ben cao and should be corrected according to our experimental results. Goushu, Keshu, Sanggu and Gusang are all refered to Broussonetia papyrifera, and Broussonetia kasinoki and Broussonetia papyrifera are the same plant. In addition, the collection methods, distribution and utilization of Chushizi are compared by ancientand and modern time.Biological characteristics and original resources distribution of Broussonetia plants were investigated in this article. The consequence showed that Broussonetia plants distribut widely in China.The microstucture of Broussonetia papyri/era's leave, stem, skin, root and fruit were investigated. Near infrared fingerprint and computer image analysis of fructus Broussonetia from different habitats and spurious breed were compared to provide scientific evidences to identify crude drug materials.Antioxidation active components of Fructus Broussonetiae were screened with in vitro models. FBH and extracts of Fructus Broussonetiae showed antioxidative effects.Fatty acids components of Fructus Broussonetiae were determined by GC-MS, the main components of fatty oil were 8, 11 -octadecadienoic acid (83.75%), methyl palmitate (10.22%), octadecadienoic acid (2.97%) and 9-octadecenoic acid (1.69%), respectively.Decreasing blood lipids activity of fatty oil was assessed. Fructus Broussonetiae contains a large mount of fatty acids and it can reduce blood TC and TG of hyperlipemia rats .Cytotoxic activities of Fructus Broussonetiae extracts and several alkaloids isolated from it have been done against Saos-2, A375, SMM1990, Hela and BEL-7406 cancer cells. It is demonstrated that total alkaloids and some pure compounds could inhibit the growth of five cells.Ten pure chemical compounds have been isolated and identified by IR, NMR, MS spectroanalysismethods: 11 pure compounds were isolated from Fructus Broussonetiae. There are Sub-1 (Broussopapyrine), Nitidine, Liriodenine, Oxyavicine, Isoterihanine, Trillin, (3-sitosterol, Fucosterol,5-tocopherol, sucrose. All of them are obtained from fructus broussonetia for the first time. Sub-1(Broussopapyrine A) is a newly found compound.In every edition of China pharmacopoeia, there is no quality control standard on active chemical components of Fructus Broussonetiae. The paper prompts some new data of Fructus Broussonetiae for the future edition.We suggest, that extracts by alcoholor water, total fatty acids and total alkaloids should be respectively no less than 3.7%,5.23%, 14.56% and 7.98 mg-g"' be considered as a reference.
