OBJECTIVE: This study conducted an initial probe of the inhibiting effect of Se-rich spirulina platensis (SeSp) on tumor growth and the activity of glutathione peroxidase, T lymphocyte and natural killer cell in tumor-bearing mice. METHODS: The models of inoculated hepatoma 22 (H22) and sarcoma 180 (S180) in mice were prepared to observe the antitumor activity of SeSp. The effects of SeSp on GSH-PX activity in serum and liver tissue in tumor-bearing mice were tested by GSH-PX kit. The effects of SeSp on T cell and NK cell activity in tumor-bearing mice were tested by modified MTT assay. RESULTS: SeSp inhibited significantly the growth of tumor in mice, and activity of GSH-PX, T cell and NK cell in tumor-bearing mice were also enhanced in comparison with control group. The effects of SeSp are more potent than that of ordinary spirulina platensis at the same dose and that of Sodium Selenite with equal content of selenium. CONCLUSION: SeSp inhibited significantly the growth of tumor in mice. Its mechanism of antitumor action may be related to its enhanced activity of GSH-PX, T cell and NK cell.
