Objective: The study was designed to investigate the relationship between nitric oxide pathway and Intima-Media Thickness(IMT) in essential hypertension (EH) in order to provide a new method for the diagnosis and treatment of EH.Methods: Fifty-three patients with EH and twenty-two normal individuals were selected to measure their blood pressure, weight and other routine test, IMT with Ultrasound,as well as the serum NO, NOS and SOD in different ways. In fifty-three patients with EH, blood pressure and serum lever of NO were measured after treatment for 3-months.Results:①Serum NO, NOS and SOD levels in patients with EH(53.92±16.30μmol/L,20.69±3.51U/ml,91.15±16.18U/ml)were significantly lower than that in normal controls(68.66±17.16μmol/L,32.73±4.44 U/ml,103.89±14.28 U/ml, P < 0.05).②There were significant differences in the levels of serum NO,NOS and SOD among the 2 clinical grading of EH(the first grade follows as 58.33±16.39μmol/L,22.10±3.09 U/ml,95.10±15.53 U/ml ,the second grade follows as 48.18±14.59μmol/L,18.85±3.19 U/ml,85.99±15.87 U/ml, P < 0.05).③Levels of serum NO were lower in EH with IMT≥0.09cm (46.57±12.72μmol/L)than EH with IMT<0.09(67.07±13.67μmol/L), and levels of serum NO correlated negatively with IMT.④After 3-month's treatment, the increase of serum NO were more significant in patients with normal blood pressure than patients with abnormal blood pressure (75.13±13.32μmol/L and 63.26±14.92μmol/L,P < 0.05).Conclusions: NO is probably involved in the pathophysiological process of EH and Carotid Artery restructuring.
