| In recent years, looking for natural antioxidants have been taken seriously by scientists at home and abroad. At present, a great deal of natural antioxidants products have been exploited, which have gained popularity. Among them, antioxidation of extracts of aromatic plants are wildly payed attention. Most of researchers put their focous on essential oils, but studies on the nonvolatile parts are limited, especially on their abilities for scavenging free radical, antioxidation and the effects on cancer cell. As for existing results, most of which are about well known aromatic plants, such as lavender and rosemary. In the present study, the extracts of dry leaves of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita were taken by using three extraction methods. And obtained six different extracts, which were used as the experiment materials. Six chemiluminescence systems and two colorimetric systems were used to systemically evaluate their capacity of scavenging all kinds of free radical, antioxidation and that of preventing DNA damage. The effect and mechanism of these two aromatic plants on HCT-8 colon cancer cells were also studied to evaluate their anticancer activities. The results of antioxidation experiments revealed that extracts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita could not only directly scavenge O2-, but also reduce the production of O2- through inhibiting the bioactivity of xanthine oxidase. The experiments results also showed that extracts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita could efficiently scavenge OH , H2O2, ONOO-, CO3- and DPPH, inhibit lipid peroxidation. The extracts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita could obviously inhibit and delay DNA damage caused by OH , acting as mixing-type antioxidants. The results of cell experiments indicated that extracts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita had inhibiting effect on proliferation of HCT-8. The results also demonstrated that extracts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita could dose-dependently increase the activities of SOD and the level of GSH, but reduced the activities of CAT, inhibit the production of lipid peroxidation and change ONOO" in and out HCT-8. The extracts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita can also cause apotosis a certain degree in HCT-8, which indicated these extracts probably changed... |
