Objective: To study the expression of nuclear factor- κB (NF-κB) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in pateints with IgA nephropathy(IgAN).Method: Thirty-six pateints with biopsy-proven IgAN was graded according to the Lee' s classification. Immunoreactivity of NF-κB and ICAM-1 were examined by immunohistochemistry.Pearson correlation analysis was applied to assess relationship between NF-κB and ICAM-1 expression and glomerular filtration rate or urinary protein excretion.Result: Faint immunoreactivity of NF-κB and ICAM-1 was observed in the control kidney tissues, In IgAN NF-κB was significantly increased in parallel with the degree of renal tissue damage (P <0.05) .In IgA nephropathy strong upregulation of ICAM-1 was observed in glomeruli in parallel with the mesangium of proliferation. However, its expression was decreased in IgAN with Ⅳ-Ⅴ class. In tubulorinterstitial mainly localized to atrophied tubules and infiltration of cellular, correlated with tubulointerstitial disturbance, spearman correlation analysis revealed that tubulres and interstitium of ICAM-1 were correlated with the tubular atrophy and interstitial infiltration of leukocytes, interstitial fibrosis; Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the expression of NF-κB and ICAM-1 was closely associated with the glomerular filtration rate and urinary protein excretion (P <0.01) .Conclusion: NF-κB expression is increased in kidneys with IgAN, and NF-κB expression correlated with progression of renal tissue injury in IgAN; Expression of ICAM-1 correlate with progression of IgAN, tubular and interstitial expression of ICAM-1 can be a marker of disease progression.
